The trouble is he doesn't seem to have learned anything from the Cambridge game as he selected the same team this week. Most fans knew the team he picked last week wouldn't work before kickoff and yet he stuck with it and, surprise surprise, it didn't work again. These first two games have seen an alarming fall in confidence in his competence among fans, myself included. The jury's still out, but I've a feeling they're close to coming back in.

Very true, like I said though, the next two league games are crucial for me.

    Pro’s

The centre backs look generally very good, very solid. Much better than season.

The front two are different gravy.

Connor Wood - some great deliveries from his left boot. I’d actually be tempted to stick him at left back and give him licence to get forward . Defensively, he’s no worse than Henley and he’d give us more attacking threat. Get a proper left winger in front of him.

O’Donnell looks much more confident and capable with proper centre backs in front of him.

In both boxes we look strong. When we get the ball into the box we’re a threat. And as today showed, we don’t even have to control the midfield to score goals.

    Cons

The midfield needs work. It improved second half, Devine in particular. But we need someone who can put his foot in.

Linked to the first. We gave away possession way too cheaply at times and at times we simply couldn’t get on the ball.

You do realise one of those 'proper' centre backs was playing in front of O'Donnell all of last season don't you?

He was. He’s probably found his level now. That’s probably true for both.

Maybe, or perhaps he just needed to play with a partner he has confidence in.

Positives- we played 4-4-2 with wingers and stretched play. The number of times we out great delivers into the box or played Donaldson through was impressive.

Cons- it took Bowyer until now to realise what the majority of us could see

Being a cynic here.... maybe the early selections had a different agenda? Maybe to persuade the owner to cough up a few more quid? Maybe the Doyle offer was on the table for a while and he was reluctant? Maybe he needed playing in an unfamiliar role to give him a nudge towards thinking ‘I don’t fancy this’.

    Maybe not, but it happens.

Possibly, but for a team that hadn’t won at home since March and only twice in 2019, it seems silly to play a weakend team to force a point. What if that had hit confidence amongst players as it did some fans? Once you lose confidence, form tends to go soon afterwards and then it’s hard to get back out of the rut.

Yep fair point. And it's probably unlikely. But maybe he was prepared to 'sacrifice'a couple of games, and trusted that any damage would be minimal, if it allowed him to make important changes for the next 40+ games.

No idea. But we looked much more balanced yesterday and his wages will hopefully allow us to strengthen.
