Melor and Wood are the closest we have to wingers. I'd stick them in and see if they can provide us with some much needed width.

I think there is a good chance Mellor will play with his past connection to Bowyer

 

If Bowyer picks A.O'Connor we need to contemplate our actions.

If we get on his back it could destroy the game for us.We may need
to hold back and see if he tries to make amends by putting in a
monumental performance.

It's no good prioritising our discontent 're Portsmouth when a victory
is vital.

Mellor back to that right sided midfield role he did well - bit more height in the side, dropping back to help Butterfield screen the back 4. Payne as a 10, Ball further forward.

 

'Two weeks' isn't a length of time, it's a place. Rather like room 101.
So when Scannell, Reeves and co are two weeks away, they're never to be seen again.

 

Alternatively..... one of our biggest problems all season has been vulnerability down the flanks. We give too much space away for crosses to come in easily, which our CBs don't deal with.

So we could go with something close to a 442 and try and give our full backs better protection and bring some balance back into the side. If we did that sort of thing, I'd go with:

It'd rob Payne of some freedom - but giving him freedom isn't helping in terms of results. He could still drift a bit if LOB played with a bit more defensive discipline - he's got the energy to cover the left side of the pitch if Payne is out of position. Mellor could tuck in a bit too. Ball can drop deeper to help the midfield if needed.

Something like that might be a bit more balanced.

 

That doesn’t look a bad side. It has been screaming for two strikers and a bit more solid defence. There has been too much congestion in midfield.
