Agreed. The last winger we signed that played for Newcastle couldn't stop scoring and assisting.

Paul Scally was the Gillingham owner before selling the majority of Gillingham shares to Brad Galinson, Scally retaining a minority shareholding, he was never Gillingham's manager.

Agreed Bronco, i never stated he had. i was just comparing the tenures of both. However to someone Our CEO obviously has more football knowledge than Scally as Scally got Gillingham relegated last year

He obviously knows his football him being at Gillingham since 1995, having one thing in common with Rupp " Prior to starting his photocopier business he "owned a motor racing team" and 3 promotion during his spell at owner.

For sure, we can give our opinions, and I agree with some of the criticism that has been dished out to Hughes and the players so far this season.

But in context, this could be a very small part of the season. If Hughes reverts to a flat back 4 and things improve, nobody will look back at the first 5-6 games and claim it derailed our entire season, they won't even remember the 'experiment', and football is all about experimenting even if it's outside a lot of supporters' comfort zone.

I guess I'm taking the long view this season.

And I have no idea who Adam Wilson is, so cannot comment, but on paper the basics are there: young, winger, all fine, it's down to whether he's actually a good player or not now.

I think I've said this before, but he seems like a peculiar fellow to me.

If he just needed a kick up the bum on this occasion, then fair play to Hughes.

The Jake Young thing has people calling him a poor man manager, but he's clearly shown he will man manage players when they need it - like Andy Cook last season.

I don't think he's a poor man manager at all, I just don't think he gave a toss about Young for whatever reason, and now it looks like a bit of a mistake.

If he cares about the player, he's actually a pretty darn good man manager.

I thought Smallwood played his best football alongside Adam Clayton allowing him more freedom maybe he can replicate it with McDonald

Just the one under Rupp custodianship, thank God the next would have been unthinkable, but not great was it from a team challenging for a place in the Championship to a run of the mill team in the fourth division, throw in rebellion by fans wanting both Rupp and his mate out only to be pleaded with to not go a head with the fly bye.

Four promotions, three relegations, three Wembley appearances and an FA cup quarter final.

Running a club in the arse end of nowhere, with less than 5,000 as an average crowd, in a ground with only three sides.

    He didn't do bad

I know exactly what you meant anything to deflect the falk from Rupp.

@Dratsab above post says what I would have posted, yes relegation aren't good but the counter is as Dratsab quotes.

Just a bit of banter mate, Scally has been in charge during their good times and bad, unfortunately all we've had under Rupp is relegation and little to enthuse about with regards what we've seen on the pitch.

Hi on comment , low rent on facts I believe.

Read the content of both comments so you carefully understand their meaning before responding is a sound philosophy?

Paul Scally knows how to run a football club, namely Gillingham, was the original comment .

He was the OWNER and CHAIRMAN not an employed CEO.

He left in or around late 2022 after seeing the club relegated at the end of the 2021/22 season, so not very successful at overseeing progress? They dropped from the heady heights of the CC until they find themselves in L2, under his “ successful” running of the club since 1995. Are we getting this yet?

Since 2004/5 they like us have languished in the bottom two tiers, sinking in?

Under his running and ownership of said club they were around £13million in debt in around 2007-2009. Inc getting the electricity turned off after owing £100,000 to their provider.

Since then and until December 2022 they may have managed to just keep afloat. Posting losses I believe every season right up to Covid hitting the world. Oh no …this is not looking a good example?

They were taken over in December 2022 and as part of the deal Scally , who can run a “successful” foolball club, and unsurprisingly left in animosity with the supporters.

A quote from a Gills supporter after he had left

One fan wrote: "Well Mr Scally if you hadn't managed to turn the whole supporter base against you. I think you have now." . This was after a live radio inter where Scally slagged off fans.

Yes perhaps your late intervention of something you know little about wasn’t as good as one may think?

If that’s a way to running a club, I’m glad we have the stability we have, irrespective of who owns us and who “ runs” the club. Paul Scally wasn’t a very clever example of how to “ run” a football club after all was it.
Keep it up mate. Any more L1/2 “ successes” you can measure the club against?

Anyhow, moving away from talking about other clubs owners. I wonder if we'll be bringing in either the lad from Leicester or JKG from Palace before Friday. Or if we'll be hit by another curveball move that nobody saw coming like Wilson. As Hughes said, he wanted to do business before the deadline, so maybe we can expect some movement after tonights game?

I too agree with some of the criticism aimed towards Hughes. I also agreed with some of the criticism aimed towards Jewell and Parkinson.

For folk to call for his head after 4 league games is ludicrous though. Sadly, thats where we are - social media is absolutely toxic and this new wave of impatient, entitled, spoilt man/child fan is something we will have to deal with for a long time.

I still maintain while Hughes failed his remit last season - the season was not a disaster like some will have you believe. He came 'fairly close', made progress and he certainly deserves a fair crack at it again. 4 games is not a fair crack.

Ahhh just couldn't help yourself - I bet you tried though!

Anyway, permanent signing and for a small fee. Looks like Mr Sparks went down the back of the sofa and found a few quid. Not just loan money remaining after all....

That’s fair whilst acknowledging and agree we should be doing better. It wasn’t the play off 2nd leg that sealed our seasons fate Serge.

I'm ok with the signing, I just saw an opportunity and took it ;)

I hope the lads a success and certainly signing our own players should prove more beneficial in the long run but there's a doubt as to whether going this route we can get the same quality as some of the better loans.

For instance, will this lad have the same impact as Scott Banks?
