Pre-Season Friendlies 23/24

I am keeping everything crossed that Hughes is the man to get us out of this league. I think we are close to having a team to achieve it. It’s past the time we should have been out of here

 

Unfortunately I’ve seen absolutely nothing this pre-season to make me feel optimistic.
It’s the same lethargic build ups where a backwards pass is first choice and eventually a piss poor delivery into the box from defenders pretending to be wingers.
I was bored watching most games last season and was hoping things would be different but so far no evidence of it.
Taylor is the new Kelleher.

 

No enthusiasm at all for the new season yet.

Not sure if hangover from playoff disappointment, quiet and underwhelming transfer activity so far, or the dreaded 3 at the back.

Hopefully a good win at Crawley will bring me round

 

I have seen more pressing this pre season than the whole of last. I worry about the defence but we have looked much better on the front foot

 

I fear we have too many options. I think the best 11 players just can't play at the same time. There just isn't a decent formation to suit. 3 at the back scares me too be honest. Last season only needed a few tweaks to a reliable defence. A new left back who attacks down the line and crosses into the box. A pacy left centre half to replace Crichlow. Going forward Patterson to replace Gilliead, a right winger to replace banks and the lad from Brentford to replace Halliday.

 

Hughes has won nothing as a manager, he blow it last season. Why do people think it will be different this time.

 

Behave yourself, we cant keep sacking managers!!! Disgarceful to call for the head of a play off losing manager.

Hughes has a year left and he should see it out and then the club makes the relevant call.

 

That is spot on. How come Hughes and the useless recruitment team have made such a mess of it

Mines been pretty consistent poor recruitment added to a poor squad.

just glad more people are waking up to it and hopefully the club address the chronic lack of goals (bar cook) and now a wobble defence.

 

Taylor looks absolutely horrendous from what I've seen so far.

The late equaliser against Boro where he's 20 yards behind the back line sticks out but here again he's completely done by someone who's generally struggled at league level.

I've only seen him live once and that was at Bury where he was also very shaky when isolated but I'm not convinced this pre season isn't actually his level and we've signed a complete and utter dud.

 

Let’s see where we are after 10 games a defeat to a team looking for a scalp of another league club in the final pre season game where players are looking to avoid injuries. We have decent players and if they are utilised well there is absolutely no reason we can’t have a successful season.

 

I agree but last season we were never on the front foot we always had men behind the goal we didn’t make enough and take enough chances. Now we have adopted a pressing game which in my opinion is good, but the defence as a unit is to slow and unless that is addressed I think we will slowly regress back to the negative and boring tactics of last season. To avoid that our final two signings should be a wing back and a left sided central defender who is mobile. Then I think we could have a winning combination

 

Why does it have to be the manager .. why can’t it be simply that the players aren’t good enough? How many managers have taken the chop for poor poor players.. see it happening again.

not sticking up for Hughes think hes got limitations but the players and scouting take a huge portion of blame for the fog of negativity.

 

You’re like a stuck record. We know what you think. You don’t have to keep repeating yourself, you’re getting boring.

 

Like it or not he is right though.

 

No chance Stubbs gets shrugged off like that in a real game.

It was awful, but I feel Rodney may have been a little more committed to that challenge.

 

No alarm bells from me just yet. I’d say we’re a couple of players short of a decent team. I’d like another pacey forward as competition/backup to Smith. I also, as with everyone else, think we need a LWB.

Other than that I don’t think we’re too far off a team that can compete at the top of the league. CB is an issue as we lack pace, so if Odusina isn’t the answer then playing one of the RBs as a RCB might be the option (as England did with Kyle Walker). Overall though I’m not too concerned, I think we’ll compete this season.

 

Hard to disagree and we can only go on what we have seen but when he is a bit more settled, team has gelled and the games are competitive then I suppose we can make a proper judgment.

I seem to remember Chesterfield battering us 3-0 a week before the seasons eve 12 months ago. A lot of players were written off then too - season wasn't too bad.
