    From what I've read McDonald plays precisely the role of Smallwood. So if he plays Smallwood would either be dropped or played elsewhere, which we know makes him largely redundant. I'm hoping we have a plan for how we want to play and recruit accordingly but judging by Hughes' performance last year I'm not confident. But it's very early days so let's see where we are by the first game.

    Smallwood needs a certain partner to get the best out of him. I've not seen MacDonald play but if he is to sign i hope its a player that complements Smallwood rather than mirrors him.

    Barrow's Bingley born Ben Whitfield the latest name I've seen linked to us. Attacking midfielder who is still under contract I think, so will need to pat a transfer fee

    The squad is feeling a bit league 2 with no upside as in players capable of stepping up to league 1 next year. Early days but a 32yr old centre half from Scotland, a rumoured 34yr midfielder isn’t exactly future planning. The lad from Barnsley might be the exception
