IF we did sign Mcdonald and he plays the Clayton role, does that mean we play the diamond again and Smallwood is pushed into a position that's unfavourable on the left? As experienced as Smallwood is, I hope we get midfielders who are specialists in their position and not all rounders. We lacked creativity badly last season and both Smallwood and Gilliead are too defensively minded as it is. We need more from Chapman, Osadebe has to produce and we need the Walker of 21/22, not 22/23.

Agree with a lot of that Jon, but just refer you to Salford who were going to be Championship in 3 years on the back of money!! Realise everything you’ve said about brand but money well spent is the key. I don’t know the Wrexham squad well enough but reputed £6 k per week on a 38 year old keeper doesn’t fit the well spent pattern for me.

 

This is where I have a problem…..They couldn’t attract Williams over us. In fact they were amazed to be turned down apparently and ever tried again in the hours after he then turned us down before signing for the Gills. That’s a poke in the eye right?

I don't know about individual circumstances but put it this way, if Wrexham come calling for me i'd be going there. Reminds me of the BFG days and the ensuing roller coaster ride.

Although many players want to earn as much as they can, in this instance money was not the driver. Williams wanted to play for Gillingham but he wanted them to pay him what we were offering. So he used us to lever that signing. Wrexham were not in it, as he knew they would pay him whatever, but Gillingham were only going to pay a good reasonable wage.

Yeah i was having a conversation with a father of someone who played under Curle last year, got to the point where he didn't want to go to the games anymore as he couldn't bare to watch what Curle was doing. Wasn't the only player he played out of position.

 

If you're talking about Foster he's even older than that. But that '6k' a week is money well spent with the publicity alone, as we know that publicity generates turnover no one else in league 2 and the majority in league 1 can't get near. Apparently £20 million turnover with a 10,000 capacity, their income is generated off the back of stuff like this. The Ryan Reynolds effect, the lad can turn shit to gold he's that good a businessman.
