For me, the silver lining is, should we finish 8th I don't think there will be a genuine push for Hughes to go.

That's been my biggest fear all season.

Yeah, we can say he's underachieved if we finish 8th, but there's nothing more frightening than the prospect of Rupp/Sparks picking his replacement.

Let's face it, Guardiola isn't going to send an email to the club's spam folder, so what we need is continuity AT LEAST in terms of the style of football we're playing (only slight tweaks please!)

The problem would be next season.

Give Hughes another window, and I genuinely think the home fans will expect us to win every single game, piling the pressure as soon as is possible.

I wonder if Harrogate will beat Mansfield. They've been doing ok recently.

I'm going for a Grimsby/Stevenage draw. They're not a bad side aren't Grimsby and will give it a go. Stevenage have been finding ways to win but pressure will be on them.

if that situation does happen we would be very unlucky, as a Carlisle win would put us in the playoffs with only 3pts from our last three.

plus it would be unlucky to have every result not go our way. I expect at least one of those games to go against the top 7 but to our benefit (Salford City V Gillingham springs to mind) personally I see us getting 5 points here. ending on 77.

if we win tomorrow and on Wednesday it nails down the playoffs really.

Yes and it would also send us into the final day with the autos still possible. Fine margins!

If it goes to the last match I can just imagine the trauma of people trying to get info on their phones with the absolutely crap Internet coverage at VP.
The tension will be hard to bear.

If we do or don't make the playoffs there should be no push whatsoever to see Hughes go. He's had one full season and we've progressed pretty well really.

If people do feel that way just remember where we were before he came in it was absolutely toxic and utterly abysmal.

I don’t think Hughes will go even if we fail to go up this season but I just can’t see how next season will be any different.
We are only where we are because of Cook and Lewis, neither will be here next season in League2.
Who will come in to replace them?
How can we compete with Wrexham, Salford, Gillingham and possibly Notts County for top players at this level?
We’d be scraping from the shit bucket again. Probably end up with Richard O’Donnell and Callum Cooke back with a Jake Young / Vadaine Oliver partnership up front

He has had a decent budget this time and been backed. The factors you outline will be there next season. But his negative playing out from the back negative possession football is the more likely factor that will hinder us

I suspect that the “backing” Hughes has received has been more than covered by the pay on the day spectators who have been turning up, with another couple of thousand visitors due next week and, if anything is riding on it, a few thousand more supporting City. Not sure how many they budgeted for but I think it’s been significantly better than expected.

One season isn't enough just my opinion but i think we need to show a bit of patience with Hughes and he'll get us up. I hope Rupp has the nuts to stick with Hughes.

It will be difficult in league 2 next season particularly because Wrexham will be attractive to the better players but, if we are still here, it is still possible to compete.

Lots of pluses and negatives. Hughes has done ok but we should have gone up in autos. The draws have killed us. Let’s see how it all turns out. I like being involved on the last few games a rarity on the last few seasons for da lads.

I agree. However Wrexham will have the same spending restrictions as the rest of LG2. In my view they have the best lower league manager though. We are all desperate to get out of this league, but to build a really good squad and not immediately be staring relegation in the face, it takes at least two seasons. I have no doubt at all that the Board would have wanted to go up this year by whatever route we can achieve, but realistically would expect the manager to at least stay 2 years.

@Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam put a great summary together as to what we need for next year in terms of players and tactics. If we manage to go up, this will need an upgrade. Now that will cost money, so hopefully sponsors and the Board can find the money.

I still believe MH can change, and learn from this season, so he gets another season for me.

I think fans need to learn too. Too many people who think FIFA 23 tactics work in the real world.
4-4-2 , 4-3-3 or 5-3-2 are tried and tested formations at this level changeable depending on the opposition or how the game is panning out.
I bet £50 that PP assembles a team next season that closely matches what we had in 2013.
Big man / little man up front with 2 wingers, a tough tackling general in CM and a solid back 4

Why will they have spending restrictions?
I thought the rules were you can only spend based on your income.
So if Hollywood B-list actor wants to invest 5 million, they’re allowed to spend it.

I totally agree Parky as we know all too well is an amazing league 2/league 1 manager. I also thought they would be struck by the financial fair play rules but someone else pointed out they are able to donate and that doesn't count.

In truth they are pretty astute. Aviation Gin is a sponsor and the sales will likely have gone through the roof with the Disney Docs and because its also Ryan's company (or he is at least an investor) they can stick what ever fee they want on for the sponsorship so the clubs income can be boosted massively by that as well. I read some where each player is getting a 250k bonus for promotion too. If that's true that kind of money is staggering for national league, league Two and league one and would explain why someone like Mullin who could likely command 10 k plus in the Championship is staying with Wrexham.

Hughes is a good experienced manager we'd find it hard to get better in my opinion we need some stability. All the chopping and changing has been a disaster for us.

It seems to be that if you have limitless money to throw at this project you can get round any financial rules that the EFL put in place. Thank you for explaining it to me.
