Was quite common for a while back in the day. My dad can bore you to tears with tales of a 2-3-5 formation if you like.

Until the '66 World Cup all British teams nominally lined up in 2-3-5 formation. But in my memory of watching on TV and playing junior school football it wasn't really like that. The Centre Half always stayed back between the full backs rather than alongside the Wing Halves. At least one of the Inside Forwards was really an attacking midfielder. It was more of a 3-2-1-4 in reality, as I remember it. But I was a kid in the 60s. Some older forum members may remember it differently.

When I played school football in my teens, there was less reliance on formations whether it was 4-4-2 or 3-2-1-4 or a stunted Christmas tree. It was a much simpler and more flexible 'just spread out and surround them'!

Sounds about right mate, keeper, left and right full backs, left and right wing halves, center half, left and right wingers, inside forwards and your center forward.
I'm not suggesting formations arent a part of getting the best from players at your disposal but I much prefer good players rather than a good formation.

So you would be happy with Nahki in goal and Jim Hanson as right wing?:)

Yes I think James could play several positions if required...........but that's another arguement ;), didnt Nahki play wide at Carlise, having thought about it @Kevin1954@Kevin1954 maybe Nahki could have played in goal he certainly couldn't have done any worse than our two back up keepers last season.

Typical of Green Lane - "Look for space !"
You do - then - "Get back and cover !"
No wonder we had the fittest under 11 team. :D

Alf Ramsey was the forerunner of changing tactics from the ancient to the modern and he got heavy criticism for it at first
