Its what the security of a contract does even if there is only 6 months left. And if you're gonna get paid in full for 6 months you ain't gonna go elswhere for less money unless circumstances dictate, such as being homesick because that is then you necessitating the reason to leave not the other way round.

It's common sense, I can't even believe it's being debated in fairness.

Exactly the same scenario exists with sacked managers. They don't get a "payout" they get paid until they get a new job (or their contract ends, whichever comes first) and an adjustment if that is lower money.

At any one point in time Chelsea have up to four ex managers on their payroll.

Everyone we have released has gone straight to a new club, more than likely with the help of a deal made by Turnbull, so I doubt if our exposure is any more than the difference in wage they were earning with us v the new wage, up to the end of their BCFC contract. Ergo, the cost of releasing BRE, DMH & Co will be absolutely negligible and nothing in the case of Samuels.

What do you mean "couldn't ask for extra money"?

You need to be more precise with your language.

The player isn't asking "for extra money", he has a contract which stipulates his earnings and potential for bonuses. If he was leaving, he wouldn't be asking for extra on top of that.

What you seem to be suggesting is that every player who left (because you said "we paid no one off") just cancelled their contract with their last day of pay being the day that they left the club and went to sign elsewhere.

That is possible but unlikely, in most cases there would have been some settlement because some of the cases the club would have been suggesting they leave and therefore would need to pay something towards their departure. All those who left didn't just rip up their contract with no further payments.

I understand FA rules state that players who end contracts of leave by mutual consent should be paid a minimum till the end of the month plus one extra month unless a greater sum is agreed, Players who are at the end of contract and leave the club are entitled to 2 months extra pay to tide them till another club.

Yes, Vaughan won't have cost us any more than the difference in what we were paying him v the difference in his Tranmere contract up to June 2022 (when his City contract ended). It will have cost us a bit, but I seriously doubt we let him walk away to significantly lower money at Tranmere, or that he would have gone for significantly lower, simply because he could have been stung with a tax bill.

Surely when your contract has ended your employment has also ended? Why would the club have to pay another two months to a player they don't legally employ anymore?

Yes, it's not exactly going to come as a shock that your contract, which was for an agreed period of time, has ended. Can't imagine 02 giving me two months extra at the end of my phone contract to "tide me over"

I can just see Real Madrid giving Bale 2 month extra at the end of his contract cos he's had a few bills to pay

Nothing surprises me in football anymore. The players have held all the power, ever since Jimmy hill broke the maximum wage , hopefully the salary cap will now bring some sort of normality back. Although it needs to be throughout the whole of football and the limit in the lower divisions needed to be slightly more, to reflect the teams with larger turnover.

Apparently Graham Carey is in talks, not sure if on a free now or in summer. Currently stuck in Bulgaria and wants out. Watch this space...

I can't see it. He'd be expensive, he'd have no real resale value and we're pretty well stocked in the wide areas now.

I'd file that one with the Danny Graham rumour.

True. A good way to think of it, is those youngsters have allowed us to have a far better squad. They play a crucial role even if not playing as you need a certain quantity of home grown players. Far better to have ones, who you are willing to play as means you can get better quality players elsewhere

No resale value, but one of the better lower league players, oozes quality, goals and assists. Its a no brainer if he's available.

We already have Evans, Clarke, Vernam, Crankshaw, Stevens and Ismael though. He's quality no doubt but we've signed 3 wide players since Christmas, I really can't see a 4th joining.

Its not going to happen in reality but he's far too good for this division. Be great if we could set something up for next season. I thought he was a player who just roamed around where he wanted setting up goals as opposed to a winger

You can strike Ishmail off that list. The way he's going with injuries, don't bank on him being out with Covid as soon as he recovers from his latest setback.

Footballers as employees will have contracts with minimum standards set under employment law, they will be fairly similar to your and my work contracts, setting out the rights of the employee and employer, including many things such as pay for sickness, severance, notice etc... What each player and club negotiates above an beyond that at signing, or as part of a termination package will likely be never known to the likes of us lot! But it is fun to speculate.
