Ridiculous calling this off. Yorkshire ccc had 4 players unavailable due to the virus two weeks ago but still played on, as did Stevenage on Saturday. It’s just playing politics by the Grimsby chairman, EFL should get tough and award Cheltenham and ourselves 3 points for unnecessary postponement. If every club carry on like Grimsby the season will be chaos.

Yes you're correct, but as you say Orient had multiple positive tests so this was the only option.

I agree it could lead to chaos. But clubs aren't in a position to postpone league games unilaterally. It's an EFL decision based on representations from the club or clubs involved. For the game to now be postponed, the EFL must have approved it.

    Not disagreeing at all.

The interesting thing is that the English Football League decided that Leyton Orient must forfeit their Carabao Cup tie against Spurs as they are unable to play the fixture, in line with ‘competition rules’.

Not sure what the ‘competition rules’ are in respect of league fixtures.

As Grimsby only have one player tested positive, then if we have a single player who is not fit due to some illness does that mean we can just ‘cancel’ games?

Quite right it was postponed with something like 16 or 17 positive cases. But if Stevenage can still play their game the day after they have a case confirmed, and with a further 2 cases confirmed on the day of the game, I'm really struggling to see how Grimsby can postpone a game that is still 5 days away with only 1 positive case. It doesn't make sense.

No. Only the EFL can postpone league games. See #63

Let's see what information comes out as to why they approved the postponement.

I don't think Grimsby are winning any fans here though. Clearly wanted the match calling off for days.

That's just how daft this is... a cold is contagious, are we gonna cancel games if the tea lady sneezes...?

With the next league match now being on Monday 12 October, we can at least use the EFL Trophy game, on Tuesday 6 October, to give our first team a run out.

There's also a possibility of bringing forward the home match v Cheltenham Town, scheduled to be played on Tuesday 1 December, if Cheltenham's match at Leyton Orient on Saturday is also postponed.

If the EFL carries on agreeing to postpone matches this easily, there will need to be a lot of fixture juggling, if we are going to keep this season going.

I guess though it's not as simple as deciding on how many people have it though. You have to judge things on a case by case basis based on how likely those with it are to have spread it to others. One single person having it may be a bigger risk than 5 people who have it

The EFL already has a protocol on this. It is very similar to the rule when a game cannot be fulfilled because an illness is sweeping through the club which does happen even in non-Covid times. Under the protocol, the 'illness' is now the no of positive tests plus the no of those in isolation. I forget the precise number but it's more than just a handful; eight first teamers rings a bell but it could be higher.

That would explain the Orient position against Walsall but it also suggests that there is more to the Grimsby situation than has been so far been explained.

I get that but there seems to be more to it than that. Grimsby could carry out tests on the rest of the squad like Stevenage did and make every attempt to get the game on but the fact is, their chairman wants the whole season suspending. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Stevenage and their willingness to do everything they could to make sure Saturday's game still went ahead. The noises coming from Grimsby are the complete opposite however, as it seems they are doing everything in their power to get as many games called off as they can. It's a very poor approach from them.

Stinks does this. If this is allowed it sets a dangerous precedent and the season will never finish. No way can an individual team call a game off at their say so because of one positive test (the tests aren’t reliable anyway) in a youth player. Getting ridiculous now.

"Noises coming from Grimsby". The only noise is coming is from you lot and your stupid Communications fella. Everyone in Grimsby is equally hacked off about the cancellations but you can make as much noise you like about every conspiracy going but the EFL postponed the games. We didn't . End of! At least you will be unbeaten for another week.
