As I understand it he’s still charged with 3rd degree murder, the 2nd degree is an addition on top.
    Could be wrong though.

not according to the charge sheet.
    Count I - 2nd degree murder
Count II - 3rd degree murder
Think the other counts are various manslaughter charges.

At the weekend when it all happened, it was reported somewhere that the cop and Floyd worked at the same restaurant/grill bar so would have known each other and even worked together on shifts.
Should make the trial and plea alot more interesting if true.
Floyd worked as a truck driver and a bouncer but why on earth would a cop need an extra job?

The cop worked security didn't he? Bouncers and Police - both have a common element of having thugs who just want to be violent under a cloak of authority.

It’s the ‘fall back’ option - if they can’t get him for 40 years they’ll get him for 25.

I think you're right. I don't think the charges are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, I get what you're thinking but after news reports last night I think they will just go for the 2nd degree charge
Note there wasn't a date on the top of your charge sheet...
So, dunno, could be wrong,we'll see..

Exactly. 2nd Degree requires prior-intent to have gone and killed that person and there is no evidence of that. 3rd Degree murder though is a horrible term. Its Involuntary Man-slaughter not a murder so I don't know why some states in the US use the term 3rd degree murder instead as it just muddies the water and makes things confusing. Murder should be reserved for when you go in with the intent to kill someone

Why is it needed? This isn't them protesting a legitimate thing, its protesting a completely made up charge of racism being the cause of Black deaths at the hands of cops when very few of these deaths have any valid suggestion it may be racially motivated. If they were protesting for better police training then fine they would have justification, if they were protesting about gun ownership they would have justification, if they were protesting about their own communities failings that need addressed (Things like the lack of value they put in education which causes them to have the biggest school drop out rate which then often limits them to a low-income life and makes getting dragged into gang and crime culture greater) then they would have a point. But they have no justification for campaigning against 'racism in the police' and getting abusive and aggressive towards the police because if it.

As I keep saying they need to do something about the high rate of death by cop (and also the high rate of Native American death by cops, which is most likely related to their struggles with drink and drugs. They really struggle with this some of it being lack of opportunity they have BUT there also seems like there may be a genetic element that makes them more susceptible to things like alcoholism. Also they often have stronger family groups which makes learned behaviour more powerful. This results in a lot of violent crime in the Native American community being alcohol and drug related) but it needs the focus to be on the actual causes not some overly simplistic reason with very little evidence to back it up but which plays well on social media that does more harm than it does good

It's the problem that the internet has brought really. While it should bring us together more what its done is its created a far-left movement. People start with good intentions but it ends up being an echo-chamber and it radicalises people and they become more close minded that they are right and more militant. And the problem is with the far-left is that while no-one has a problem calling the far-right out because its been long established their extremist views are abhorrent, the central basis of what the far-left is built on is good and if you call them out you get 'ism' claims against you which can be massively damaging. For example there have been Youtubers who are reasonable people who don't hate the minority groups and are supportive of them being treated better and being more included but when they have spoken up about the damage of the extremists they have had the hit squad put out on them. If YT isn't their main job they target their employer trying to get them sacked (often successfully), they target any company who directly sponsors their videos, they go after any company that YT have put ads on the video (Which hurts all Youtube creators as it creates an adpocaplypse and makes YT go more extreme on how they define advertiser friendly content). Basically you often can't take the risk speaking out about them and the media especially won't because they don't want to be targeted. This then just pushes everyone to the more extreme ends of the spectrum rather than them being in that nice reasonable middle ground where we should want everyone to be. And as each end of the extremist scale gets more people in it the more divided and hostile everyone gets

It's fairly common for cops in the US to have a second job be it a more formal one or just the occasional moonlighting. It has to be signed off by the the force (well supposed to be anyway) so they can ensure it has no conflict. Security is obviously a fairly natural fit as a second job for a police officer

You can see the divide building day by day. There's a tagline doing the rounds today: 'its not enough to not be a racist, you have to be anti-racist'. Which is fine to a point, in sentiment. But its not fine when it comes to others forcing their own perspective on you and denying your right to a different one. And increasingly, its a discussion that's been had on an entirely subjective and emotional basis, with no place for fact or data to get underneath the myriad complexities.

Talking of racism. Did anyone hear Piers Morgan this morning asking guests if they thought that had Maddy McCann been black instead of middle class white background, would there have been as much press coverage over the years.

That is absolute nonsense and a very incendiary suggestion to even ask in my opinion
