Is that because we aren't testing people?

The one I’ve looked at is based on amount of days since the 10th death. We are currently on 160 or so I think? Italy were around 50 lower at this stage. Nothing to do with percentages.

So true. Self employed facilitate so many people to work and pay taxes.

It’s now about us as individuals being responsible and not stupid, unfortunately I know a fair few going out tonight for one last night. Nights like tonight will accelerate it terribly, so many irresponsible idiots it’s crazy. They’ll probably pop into see their grandparents for Mother’s Day and that could be more fatalities. It’s all well and good if you think you’ll be alright but it’s a social responsibility not to pass the thing on to those that are at risk.

Fantastic news today, I feel the government was a little overdue in closing schools, pubs, clubs, restaurants, etc, but the financial measures look as robust as any nation in the world has taken allowing people to follow government advice on self-isolation and staying home with more confidence.

I've been saying for some time the government needed to take a harder stance, and now they have - I think they would admit in secret their initial timelines were way off, but they've fallen in line with other nations now without losing control of the situation.

The statistics will continue to look bad even after the weekend's closures, which effectively restrict a lot of the nation's movements, but at least we are moving forward. I hope there is a little peace of mind for those in bad situations, and the freezing of rent, mortgages, and utility bills would be an excellent next step - though not essential if people are indeed getting paid - only for those that are falling through the cracks.

I have to say, I'm very impressed with Rishi Sunnak, too. Boris less so, but nobody has really been impressed with him all along, surely.

Can we confirm that mortality rate is numbers that have corona and then numbers that die?

Can you post the link to this article? Cause I’ve certainly seen things that contest what you’re saying. I’ve seen articles say we are on a similar curve, but none to say we’re in a worse situation.

When I’m on my laptop later I’ll send some links to the articles I’ve seen.

Demographics and social norms in Italy would suggest they’re going to get smacked by viral diseases. An aging population and one that generally lives with much much younger members of the family. In the UK I would suggest that older members of the family have their own home and can self isolate much easier.

To be honest I'm pleased they are going for it in terms of support for people an businesses trying to keep people in work and a roof over their heads but he really needs to tell the banks they must not start any repossession proceedings with this going on and quickly to stop people who may think they have the virus going to work.

My biggest issue is the testing we should be doing it for everyone. The seemingly lowish numbers in some areas like Bradford is giving people a false sense of security about going out to some places. I can sort of understand why they aren't but I think it's a horrible mistake

I don't get this I am impressed with Rishi. Why? He's good at pubic speaking and presentations as are a lot of people.

This isn't the time to be impress by anyone. It's not competition time!

What we need is bills being covered as more people now have the stay at home including over 70's e.g. Things like utility, council tax, gas etc all need looking at.

Self employed are being done over. Might as well close some of them. So that needs addressing.

    Unemployed need more help.

Making sure the banks are passing on the interest rate cuts.

Loads the government needs to still do but main thing is get more testing and this antibody ASAP.

Morning Fordy. It remains to be seen whether or not Rishi Sunak proves to be a competent Chancellor, but look at his CV. He is much more than a good public speaker. Agree much more needs to be done to help unemployed. Government minister on BBC this morning completely dodged it

Morning mate, I am sure Rishi is much more than a public speaker but people have to remember that more than one person will be making key decisions. I just think it isn't time for praise. He isn't introducing the new IPhone to market.

If I am honest this should be a political issue right now. All parties should come together to make sure everything is covered hence why we missing key things like self employed, unemployed etc and over 65's.

Back to Rishi many are confused by this 80% of 2.5k. Does it apply to people who have been let go? People on zone contract hours? He like Boris doesn't explain things clearly. Always that question mark on his delivery.

So true @WilsdenBantam@WilsdenBantam, we've told the daughters not to bother with either Mothers Day cards or cards for our 50th Wedding Anniversary I've no doubt they will have both and as you say just post them through our letter box.
It's difficult for everyone but unfortunatly necessary if we have any chance of stopping this virus.

I've sent text, Emails etc but no response from Chris so sadly no updates.
I believe us oldies get the message the government are telling us possibly more than the younger end, unfortunatly we realise if we get this and also have other underlying conditions it could spell the end, fortunately I have no underlying conditions so I hope to be challenging your posts for a while yet ;).

Yes agree with that. Again the minister on BBc this morning was asked directly about the 80% of wages and he dodged it. Does the employee claim it or the employer and does it apply to those already made redundant. I think all these economic gestures sound great on paper but delivering them is another matter. From what I understand of the £330b of loans made available the government is underwriting 80% and the process is similar to the old EFG scheme so still administered by the banks, who set the lending criteria and also will be seeking PGs for the other 20%. For those that really need it it will take too long. That said I think the 3 month VAT holiday, whilst it still needs to be paid by the end of the year, can provide a genuine short term boost to cashflow

It is the employer who claims it and it does include those already made redundant if they take them back on the books

I’m a bit confused, can my employer claim 80% and top up the other 20% if I’m still working my full contracted hours? Can my employer knock a day off the working week, and pay me 80% of my usual weekly wage, without paying anything themselves? What about any overtime (not issue right now for me, but it might be if you work for Tesco) can my employer claim 80% of whatever I earn in a week?..Or do is it just a case of effectively getting laid off, and staying at home?
