It will the way we're messing about asking people to sing happy birthday and asking them politely not to buy toilet paper

Exactly. And greed is why we refuse to deal with the issue properly.

Sad to say, yes we do now live in a selfish society. Panic and stockpiling is not going to end well. If that continues rationing will be brought in.

Each country are trying to manage the situation based on their own particular needs and health service. Matt Hammond is saying that they are trying to expand capacity as fast as they can. Commissioning hotels and private hospitals. Standing down non urgent operations freeing up staff for training to look after Corvid 19 patients. Galvanising engineers and manufacturing to make ventilators. We have 5000, and that will not be enough. This is going to be a really tough call. Any critics of the government need to think long on hard. Not one single health service from around the world can cope with the peaks, it is as simple as that. Maybe they should think about that for the future. No point in wittering on this should happen, that should have happened etc etc. Time for solutions not highlighting problems. Hand wringing is banned.

Countries with experience of SARS have acted robustly and they're now normalising. Others, seem to be getting it wrong. Guess which approach we're taking.

Some of the same people fighting over bog paper in the supermarket look down at those people fleeing persecution in their country and take to boats or cross borders risking their lives to search for a new life.

The hypocrisy is all there to see.

Time will tell health professionals are split down the middle probably best to save resources for when the epidemic is at its height

Best to make sure that height isn't such a big peak, though, which is what we're not doing with our approach

That's a clear video, thanks for sharing. And I'm not saying hes wrong. But for him to be right, we'd have to buy into the idea that we have a highly competent government, able to manipulate the spread of the virus in a way that no other country seems to have been able to do.

As @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam has said, the idea is lovely in principle, by relying on the best scientific advice we're going to make sure we don't flood the health system, but it's a fantasy. Our government hasn't taken any action. Sports haven't been cancelled by the government, large meetings haven't been cancelled by the government, nothing has been closed by order of the government, we haven't closed schools or pubs or bars or restaurants or community groups or public facilities or anything, absolutely nothing.

The idea they're just waiting for the right moment is ludicrous. The especially vulnerable should be self-isolating right now, not in a few weeks, even if it's only the people most likely to die as a result of the virus, but again, that recommendation is not forthcoming. Keep waiting, they say. The government hasn't even advised that care homes lock down, none of that, zero action.

They can talk all they like about the polite requests made about washing hands and self-isolating IF you have symptoms, but a cough to most is still just a cough and not reason to barricade yourself in your house. I've seen people with colds out and about, because they think it's just a cold, and that's because they aren't diagnosed, and that's because they aren't tested. The number of cases is estimated to be over ten thousand - but if it's just a rough estimate, how are the government going to see whatever tipping point they're waiting for?

I know how: it's called a whim and a prayer.

Good luck everyone, the economy is more important, so please, keep working, keep sending your kids to school so that you can work, keep travelling abroad, and keep getting infected; it's all part of the 'plan'.

I fully respect your view, and @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam. Yes if you shut down the country and enforce it with the Police and Army, this virus will decrease, as China has demonstrated. Yet not one expert, has told me what happens next! As I keep saying no easy answers, it is a natural reaction to try and shut it down immediately. However, keeping ppl isolated for weeks/months will have a massive detrimental effect on ppl, and in the end it is unsustainable. What we are trying to do is manage this to maximise keeping the most vulnerable as safe as possible, maximises and increasing capacity of the NHS, and yes keep the economy going as much as possible. We need the economy ticking over albeit at a lower level , protecting ppl health and the economy goes hand in hand. I honestly don’t believe that the economy is priority number 1. I maybe wrong about all of this, but then I don’t think anyone has all the answers either. Here is a couple of things we all need to think about.

    1. we do not have definitive view how this disease is transmitted? Yes it is a respiratory disease and we THINk it transmits like other flu type viruses.

    2. We have no idea how to deal with this beyond shut down it stops and then what next?

    3. Why is affecting the elderly and vulnerable much more than other groups?

    4. We have no idea beyond brute force how to get ppl to comply with massive infringement of human rights beyond a couple of weeks, or how to control anxiety and panic.

All I would say is this, it is an immensely brave decision to not follow others, and to try to use data and other factors to try and manage. I don’t think there is a box marked pandemic which each country picks up and meticulously without deviations employ on their individual nations.

For the last two weeks I have gradually withdrawn from society, because I don’t want to put us at risk. The government hasn’t told me to do this I worked it out myself given what was happening.

The main requirement for maximum effect on combating this virus
is EVERYONE working together, helping each other and doing whats
    best for everyone.

The problem we have is this is the human race we're talking about
and they have been incapable of doing any of that since Cain and Abel.

If there is one reason containment outside China is not going to work as well as in China, it's because each country is doing it's own thing with an 'I know best' mentality.

What's the point in Republic of Ireland shutting down early, if a few hundred feet away, over the border, Northern Ireland is being told to go about its business as normal?

The second one gets it under control and loosens it's requirements, they'll catch it again from the others.

Same reason that Germany has ‘closed it’s borders’ with France, Switzerland and Austria, yet left its borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Poland open! Looking at the stats of total cases per million population, then Denmark have 149.2 cases, whereas France have 83.1. Logic says close your border with Denmark. Even Belgium has 76.4 so not too different from France! https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
