Remember who hired him!! What was he giving the likes of Bruenker and Wright? Anything’s possible.

We could try and recruit a player/assistant manager to overcome this. An experienced cb/midfielder player looking to go into management when he retires.

Well we can, but we are trying to balance the books. I worded it wrong lol.

I'm not sure McBurnie will go with Swansea losing James this window. But I hope he does go so we can raise some funds

With the way Bowyer is being backed - good signings, in early - I struggle to believe the idea that he won't be supported in a similar way with what he believes is genuinely important in terms of backroom staff.

I absolutely believe we'll have a capable fitness coach. We're probably constrained in terms of Drury being his number 2, but if it were a material problem then I think it'd be dealt with.

Its league 2. A number 2 who's capable is important - and that's almost entirely about what Bowyer wants. We've no idea to what extent Drury is a fit for that role. A fitness coach is important. And ideally we'd have a keeper coach.

Bowyer has good scouting contacts too.

    I don't see the problem.

We're not playing Liverpool though are we. If we've got an honest bunch of professionals that have prepared themselves properly, they're motivated, fairly well drilled and are technically competent; a) It will be a huge step up from last season b)We'll be able to compete without specialist support. Running pretty patterns at a throw-in is all well and good but I'm not sure it's the key to having a competitive advantage at this level.

Trying to balance the books in football hardy ever works.

Unfortunately for Mr Rupp he will have to accept losses.

Rhodes has said Mr Rupp will be taking the McBurnie money.

As I said, we shouldn’t go that far. My point was saying we don’t need it is short sighted and old fashioned view. The games moved on.

It’s not about pretty patterns it’s about being prepared for everything and having that advantage over the opposition which over a 46 game season will certainly come into it. It’s not about having the best squad. Means nothing

I am not saying Bowyer can’t do it as I’ve always said he will do the job at city and believe he will get us back up. But we could be supporting him better.

Drury is hopeless. Let’s not sugar coat it. He’s only here because Rahic gave him a nice 3 year deal.

Does that make it the correct decision though?

I'm sick to death of the old "he's a manager/ player and you're not so he's right and you're wrong" type arguments.

Bowyer seems to know who he wants and how to get them to understand his methods. He chooses players who fit his coaching ideals so, for now,I would think he will mould Drury likewise to gel with his strategy. He also moved position on how long he needs to get things as he wants, from 2 transfer windows to 3.This would assumably include additions or changes to backroom staff. He would not want to jeopardise his progress unreasonably I wouldn't think.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but in the context of what Bowyer wants from his number 2, how do we know?

If Bowyer has a similar view, I just don't buy the idea that the club wouldn't do anything about it.

    I'd have to agree.

In a perfect world and with an even bigger budget, Drury probably wouldn't be Bowyer's choice as number 2. That doesn't mean that Bowyer is unhappy using him in that role or that the coaching setup isn't fit for purpose. Bowyer seems to be a 'track suit manager'. He'll be very hands on in terms of coaching. As long as we have a fitness coach that knows what they're doing and Bowyer has the support needed to scout opponents, I think we'll be fine.

Different perspectives I suppose but I think doing things the way 'every club in the land' does it for the sake of it is rather short-sighted and old fashioned. Trying another approach is refreshing. I'm sure Bowyer has been fully consulted on this and would have been supported if he'd had strong views the other way. It's very possible I suppose that this is something he's pushed for and is happier operating with more autonomy.

Bowyer has taken the situation onboard, why shouldnt Drury be a part of 1st team coaching ETC he will be learning from Bowyer.

In terms of numbers we are no worse off than when we reached the play offs with Stuart . He only had Kenny black and he lost his fitness coach early in the season and had to reappoint. In an ideal world obviously he would like to have Todd but we don’t live in an ideal world

How hard can being a fitness coach be in pre-season?

'Run over to that tree and back, you fat b*stards'.
'Good, now do it again. But quicker'.

That doesn't stack up to me.

We'll have a budget, obviously, and as with all budgets there'll be a degree by which we can compromise.

I don't buy the idea that Rupp is willing to back Bowyer with a complete squad overhaul, getting players in early, but is imposing a coaching setup on Bowyer that he's not happy with. How much is an Assistant in League 2? Maybe 40-50K? We wouldn't compromise a whole season for that amount. My guess is that Bowyer had a choice between a new number 2, or money for a player. And he'd rather focus on players, which suggests he's happy enough to have Drury in the role.

I just don't see the fuss here. We have to judge our whole approach holistically, and from what I see we're starting our rebuild well.

Oh dear. Always a sting in the tail. Bring in loads of young players but don’t have the staff to coach them. Genius. This club never ceases to amaze. When the going gets tough, Bowyer could walk. Rupp calls himself a business man. Incredible.
