And I think that's sometimes why you get into a slightly warped position. You have an almost binary position on these personalities which dismisses things they do that don't fit the viewpoint and focus on the bits that fit the pre-conceived narrative. I mean, even putting Trump and Putin in the same bracket at this point is bordering on ludicrous.

However, I also think that Trump would sacrifice Europe in a breath for his own gains. But as you say that's down to his own personality flaws not because he's being worked by puppet-master Putin, he didn't need any assistance to look after his own interests.

The last paragraph is where it veers into soap opera. All this stuff about one world leader having dirt on another world leader, blah, blah, blah, is just tittle tattle to me. It's where we go from a serious discussion into conjecture, innuendo and gossip and the same is once again as true of Trump as it is of Corbyn. I have no interest in it either way.

    i wouldn’t waste your time.

Less and less can there be nuance in this world reinforcing the idea that there can only be binary opinions. Let alone dialogue or the acceptance that sometimes you yourself might be wrong, or indeed that seemingly disparate views can still have some common ground. It’s probably rare that any one view has a monopoly on what is ‘right’.

FWIW, it’s awful seeing what is happening. My heart says the allies should do something militarily to help, by my head says no. We are in a poor position, nuclear arms at our disposal is helping us not one iota, what a mess and it kind of makes a mockery of the influence having them can have. Putin knows he can just carry on, with his threats and also he knows there is still a significant reliance on them by the west for energy supplies. I honestly don’t know, I try to put myself in the position of a family, with children, in somewhere like Kharkiv and can’t imagine it. I am sure they understand the ramifications of help coming from Nato, but that must be horrific to know that there it is highly likely it won’t materialise.

They have to keep fighting in my opinion. it will be horrible but living under putin after resisting him so fiercely would not be far off as horrible as being invaded by them. I also think there is a solid chance of putin being toppled eventually if this continues

The problem I envisage is if he doesn't get stopped now, he ain't stopping further down the line and he'll come for more than just moldova. Also, he knows the next time he wants something all he has to do is just shell people and they'll capitulate. To give in now would be a complete disaster and only embolden him to do this elsewhere, whereas if he cant get past Ukraine, he's not gonna go for anywhere else. I also think what this invasion is showing us, is that we have significantly over-estimated russian combat effectiveness and tactical/strategic thinking. If they were as scary as they get cracked up to be, they'd have kicked the ukrainians arses in short order but that could not be further from what has happened so far.

This article, as well as being a useful summary of what led us to this situation, has some good points at the end about how to ultimately get rid of Putin:

It's pretty silly that we're all pretending Belarus isn't just Russia.

Yes, recognising it's a 'puppet state' is something, but given the country and it's military will just do whatever Russia says means it's Russia, not an independent state.

Putin thought he could achieve something similar in Ukraine, but he never will.

Indeed. This is the one area where we can criticise the Ukrainians, or more precisely, their previous, Russia-friendly governments. What is happening now is exactly why the Baltics, and the Eastern-Bloc countries, were so determined to join the EU and NATO as soon as possible, despite considerable mistrust of both organisations amongst the people. Fortunately, the governments were able to get the memberships through, and over the years those who thought those moves were wrong have, in general, changed their minds and seen the benefits. I know this from first-hand experience.

I agree they also invaded a country on false pretences. Instead Blair is a rich man who still has people clapping like seals when he mentions the tories or Brexit. No world leader would ever be brought to these trials not of a truly powerful nation anyway, it’s posturing at best. Feel free to arrest Putin, as long as you can get through his army and nuclear Arsenal first.

That’s just what our media want to tell us.

The same way the Russians tell their people what they want them to hear.

Our media is utterly terrible in censoring, yet most of us don’t even know it.

A very poor situation in this day and age, whoever is declared the winner (if there can be a winner out of this situation) it will take the people of Ukraine decades to get back to any sort of normality and hopefully likewise with Russia if the sanctions are kept in place or will the need for oil and wheat see those sanctions watered down.
