For a lad stepping up from 23’s into the cluster f&#k we had last season, I thought he was ok. This season, as you say, he’s got his head down and performed consistently well (until Bowyer tried to convert him to a wing back). He’s no flash Harry unlike our other rising star on the other side of pitch. I think of the bunch we have at the club right now, he’ll be the one who’ll be playing in the championship first.

 

That's the way, let's keep expectations of the players impossibly high at league two level. That'll definitely help.

 

If he only 'defends' then his crossing isn't used. The fact that he gets forward allows him to be the best crosser in the club.

I don't think he is poor. His defending has improved massively, he is prone to letting a winger cut inside but I think that is more to do with not having a left sided midfielder to come back and help out which does leave him vulnerable at times. For me he's improving all the time and he's made some fantastic last minute tackles this season.

Mezza got further forward more often, but his crosses weren't accurate. They were hit at pace, often drilled, and he didn't get too many assists, although getting the ball into that area is a positive in itself.

Wood crosses from deeper, and generally picks out an area, and does so very well.

Wood can't defend as well as Meredith, but has put a few heroic last ditch tackles in and has probably saved us a few points. There generally aren't many League Two wingers that have given him fits, either. He's more than good enough for this level.

 

23 isn't particularly young? It's still in the age range to win "pfa young footballer of the year"!

We all know you struggle to give the lad any sort of credit for his ability but please to try and kid anyone he's a seasoned professional.

Four years though?

Wood has had one poor season, one very good season - as long as he is on a two year deal, nobody can poach him.

League Two full backs rarely if ever attract transfer fees, so as long as our chairmen don't wet themselves if someone offers a whopping £50k or similar, I'm pretty sure we're good.

They should have done the same with Meredith - but four years, nope.

 

To be fair, Patrick was given a new deal off the back of a couple of wonder goals and Robinson somewhat the same.

If wood was to get a new deal in the summer it's probably because he's had a very good full season in L2 and most likely finished the season as top assister at the club and POTY.

You've never rated Wood and would happily have released him in the summer. I'm not overly sure that your opinion on him is valid?

 

Whether it's two years or one, we need to be offering it now because I'm not confident we will be able to hold onto him in the summer if we don't get him tied down to a longer deal.

Fair point. He absolutely has made some last ditch blocks covering for others. Credit where it is due. His pace is an asset.

 

Not really. Just honest. Defenders are supposed to defend first and foremost. Having the ability to get forward and add to the attack is a bonus.
His assets are pace and he is arguably the best crosser in the club. However he is poor defensively and his positioning and basics such as show the winger the outside as opposed to letting them cut in has cost us a couple of goals recently. I stand by that if we can improve him then he has the ability to go some way. He isn’t a mezza but he is streets ahead of Chicksen.

 

I agree but if you remember Stuart's last stint here he preferred McMahon rather than Darby, and as yourself IMO Darby was the better right back.

 

You crack on Bowyer. I'll take the promising 23 year old POTY candidate that looks like he can develop to do both aswell as being a threat at set pieces.
