I'll tell you who has been responsible; Connor Wood. He looked decent in most of the games he played last season and it was clear then he had talent. Having a prolonged spell in the team this season is imo, the reason he has cracked on.

The lad is bound to make some errors - he will improve as he learns from them. No mention of some of the last ditch tackles he has made to save us conceding.

Funny stat to compare is assists. Look at Saturday for instance. Connolly should have had at least 2 to his name, but the shocking misses by our strikers means he didnt get 1 to add to his wonderful goal

    No thanks.

I don't want to see any players get a 4 year contract, that's ridiculous.

We've seen multiple 3 year deals backfire, so even longer? Absolutely not for me, no.

Wood is here all next season. Around January 2021 he should be offered a further two years. Any more than that is nonsensical business based on hyperbole.

As far as we know, Wood is going to struggle just as badly with League One wingers as he did last season. The fact he's quality at League Two level is not indicative of his ability to climb the leagues. I suspect he IS able, but let's take it one or two seasons at a time.

I don't really see a problem with offering wood a new deal. Not a four year one, but two year deal with an option to extend maybe or something like that. He's our best player and he can be tapped up for free in January next year on a pre contract so we don't exactly have lots of time to sort it.

Mezza's crosses were more dangerous Wood? Not having that. Mezza was the better defender and could get up and down the line but his crossing was never what i would call an asset. Usually had Reidy in front of him. Wood is far more accurate a crosser but still has a lot to learn defensively.

Can only get the basic stats of assists rather than crossing accuracy/chances created etc but going through their time at the club:
    Meredith - League (all comps)
    16/17 - 1 (1)
    15/16 - 4 (4)
    14/15 - 1 (2)
    13/14 - 1 (1)
    12/13 - 3 (4)

    Total - 10 (12)

    Wood - League (all comps)
    19/20 - 6 (6)
    18/19 - 0 (0)

    Total - 6 (6)

I always felt with Meredith that the reason he didn't move up to the championship sooner was because his crossing tended to be inconsistent at best and last season i felt that Wood would be a better winger long term due to his crossing ability and how hit and miss his defending was especially one on ones and if you combined Meredith's defending with Wood's crossing you would easily have a top half championship full back. However, Wood's defending has improved massively over the summer to the point where he is probably considered a complete full back and someone who has benefited from the relegation. I would be very surprised if there isn't at least enquiries for him in the summer. Hopefully we can convince him to sign an extended deal even if it is just another year but wouldn't blame him if he wanted to wait to see what his options are.

Mezza"s crossing was not a patch on what we have seen from Wood so far though and he is also better at free kicks and corners. Hopefully his development will see him improve to be a very competent left back.

Meanwhile, in League Two, I'd happily settle for a Stephen Darby-type again at right back who knows how to defend first and foremost.

Can't believe Bowyer released Caddis and replaced him with Henley. Shocking appointment. What a mess.

I always thought that Caddis refused to sign because he thought he could get a better club or deal elsewhere. I think he's a bit mercenary that way

Yeah, but they signed those lads for decent money from the higher divisions.

If we were to spend £500,000 on a new player, particularly a striker, then 3 or 4 years makes sense - especially if we're a selling club like Peterborough.

tbf @NorthernMonkey@NorthernMonkey the lad got pelters last summer (and last season) from a whole bunch of people, there were times when descriptions of his performances made Chicksen look like Maldini. This time around, it seems we are looking at a different player. Certainly most comments now seem to suggest he is our most improved player if not the possible player of the season. Not sure even his biggest fan saw that coming! A new contract for him should be part of McCall's planning for the future.

It's not ridiculous, I read constant clamour for forward planning and ambition from he club so as soon as we get what is obviously a talent you want them to play it year by year and see how get on with it for a larger club to come in and tap him up for him to leave on a free? See Meredith.

Peterborough handed out a three year deal to Matt Stephens, they don't really have a bad track record in terms of player transfers do they? What is it you find ridiculous about giving a good player a longer contract....All season his quality sticks out head and shoulders above anyone else in our team.

James Justin turned 22 last week. He also joined a Premier League side from a Championship side.

James Justin has been promoted twice.

Connor Wood is 24 in July, has one relegation on his record, and plays in League Two.

    What's the parallel there?

Where's Luke O'Brien when you need him?

Didn't he do the same thing?

Rahic gave those longer deals, let's hope we've learnt.
