I've already said that I didn't understand the context of Abbo's statement, not having been in Bradford in the 60s & 70s.

Where he and I disagree is that he thinks it's ok to dredge up an analogy from 40/50 years ago, citing a name that was once seen as acceptable but now isn't, because of its widely perceived racial connotations. There are any number of ways he could have drawn the comparison with kids' football without using that particular example. It's like golliwogs - they were commonplace as toys and badges in the 60s and 70s, but they're now seen as utterly racially insensitive and unacceptable. The name Nig Nog is in the same category, as the definitions on Google make clear.
I think it's insensitive to use that example nowadays, regardless of its original context. Abbo obviously doesn't. We'll agree to disagree. End of discussion.

I now understand the context but there were plenty of other, better, ways available to make the same point.
But, like I said, let’s agree to disagree because it’s not the main purpose of the thread and will just descend into the dreaded ‘bickering’ we hear so much about in these parts.

He could have called it anything but chose nig nog knowing that someone who didn't have the same contextual knowledge would mistake it for the well known racial slur that it is. Why the feck would you use the phrase nig nog? Knowing full well that it has far more well known connotations. Im sure you are usually an intelligent poster abbo but the use of the term nig nog is pathetic. Even more so when it's used to try and catch someone out.

Absolutely this. Well done to all of those really insightful spectators that point out how far behind the men's game it is. Have you ever wondered why that might be...

Our second goal was given offside then correctly overruled by VAR. They went a bit mad and basically stopped playing for about 5 minutes. No idea why as was correct decision she was clearly onside.

Then they scored early second half and that was disallowed for offside by VAR. That one was closer but def offside. So they went a bit mad again.

    Very unprofessional.

Very weak was the referee on Sunday, but having watch nearly all the England games the possession game will cost them against better opposition IMO.
Several times they have caused themselves problems trying to keep possession around their own box, and going forward they look for that killer ball instead of having the faith in their own ability.

Catmuck. The post that you thanked Stork for, the one explaining what a nignog (locally) was, that was from a T&A article from June 2018, not 40/50 years ago! The word was nationally newspaper acceptable 24 months ago.........

I didn't attach any racial connotations to it, it just has more comedic affect than "Bradford Sunday Alliance", yer nig nog.

You're being deliberately obtuse. Use of language changes all the time. No one uses 'forsooth' or 'verily' in common speech nowadays, but they once did.

People with learning disabilities used to be officially medically categorised as cretins, idiots, imbeciles or mongoloids, but not now. No one (other than bigots and religious extremists) calls gay people queers, benders or shirtlifters these days. No one (apart from unrepentant racists) calls Asians Wogs or black people niggers any more.

The term nig nog was perfectly innocent when the club started in the 1930s in the north east. By the time the Bradford version closed in 1978 it had acquired racial connotations throughout the country, as a derivation of nigger, which is now the only meaning that 95% of the country would recognise. So of course it's outdated.

They are good. The difference with the US is they had no historical bias as footy wasn’t really played by men. They got a lot more funding too. The other teams are catching up though. Good to see. Especially if you are a father of a daughter

Poor defending resulted in USA both goals. Stronger, and fitter ( something we can do something about) then we wouldn’t get bullied off the ball! Poor passing as well, better in the second half. We also need to rethink mid game, get running at them rather going for miracle passes although it did result in our first goal.

We were also predictable, something Neville needs to work on. However, there were good chunks of that game we out played them, excellent character. Overall good, but need to move on up now, fitness and strength, plus working on technical ability. Best team overall won, so no real complaints from me, although not quite sure about VAR, there was no obvious and clear error on the offside? 3 inch if that, are you having a laugh!
