I bet they barely got 20 between them last season.

Injuries have been the biggest issue (so far) in terms of what players like Angol, Eisa and to a lesser extent Cook have been able to show.
If we can keep all three fit then coupled with the new signings (and Walker) we have potential.
Last season was dogged by injuries to the three mentioned above. Had they all stayed fit then our league position could have been a lot better.

Fantastic post. It gives some great perspective. Not many score more than once every 180 minutes.

    Andy Cook.

He'll get 30 and we'll be up by Christmas.

Looking at this simplistic model you have created to predict future performance, I think we'll be okay. We've shipped 53 goals conceded from the 3 goalies last season and arrivals account for just 5 (premier league 2) goals. Therefore we don't need to score many to improve our league position.

With Vadaime Oliver signed and Mark Hughes stating that he still wants Dion Pereira on loan I'm satisfied that we have the firepower for a promotion side.

The big guns firing last season's sides to promotion were:
Forest Green 42 (Matt Stevens 23, Jamile Matt 19)
Exeter City 26 (Matt Jay 14, Timothy Dieng 12)
Bristol Rovers 26 (Aaron Collins 16, Anthony Evans 10)
Port Vale 36 (Ben Garrity 12, Jaime Proctor 12, James Wilson 12).

I'm confident that, playing mostly one up front Angol/Cook/Harratt/Oliver can put away 20+ and three attacking midfielders Chapman/Walker/Pereira can add another 20+.
I may be being greedy but I hope we can keep Cook and add Pereira because they add something a bit different and improve the options when Plan B is needed.

I expect perhaps three more players to go out on loan. Even with this I doubt whether the budget meets Ryan Sparkes 'sustainability' target but, as the saying goes 'you've got to speculate to accumulate' and Stefan Rupp will recoup any additional outlay through the increased value of the club if we gain promotion.
So are we a promotion side this year? If we keep a biggish squad I think we will be.

I always thought Dieng was a quality cdm for us. possibly the last quality player we had in that position. Was good to see him showcasing his abilities last season for Exeter

Jaime Proctor was a good striker for us as well. An is very capable of playing a specific role in a team. Both players have gotten stick from fans in the past an I struggle to see why

Dieng was very inconsistent. He seemed to lack motivation.
He only seemed to perform after he'd been dropped, then his performances would gradually get worse until he was dropped again. Hence he was in and out of the team. On his day he was a top end League One player.

As you say he was inconsistent. Maybe a player who needs an arm round the shoulder.

That was McCall's style. Maybe dropping out of the football league with Southend gave him a kick up the arse?

Interesting looking back at this thread.
It looks like we had the 15-20 goal striker on our doorstep but the other incoming players you detailed are true to form so far. We still need someone to chip in with another 10.

Looks at times like the recruitment guy brought in players to play one style and MH wants to play different

I see judging by todays T&A the manager is not for turning a bit like Derek Adams. Fro a personal point of view I don’t care what tactics are used as long as they are effective. But this season promotion is a must the manager has had great backing from the club and magnificent backing from the crowd so should he fail I think next season will look a lot less Rosie

Good, no decent manager has ever caved in to fan pressure or a guy on radio Leeds who was doing Cricket a month ago.

Parkinson didn’t change when people called him Plonkinson and rightly so, most fans don’t have a clue. I spent 90 minutes on Saturday with a guy near me screaming at Richie Smallwood to feck off back to Hull every two minutes. I’d rather my club didn’t listen to imbeciles like that.

We don't need to abandon our principles, but we do need to be open to tweaks. Trying to establish a style of play you believe in and riding out the setbacks isn't a bad thing. We've had far too many resets and we've recruited to a style - it'd be madness to tear that up. I do think a couple of obvious squad tweaks are becoming apparent though. And the playing out from goal kicks thing needs to stop. Far more often than need, it leads to pressure on our goal, not the oppositions. I'd also welcome the idea of leaving at least 1 person up front when defending set pieces.

    These aren't massive changes.
