As long as there is no additional cost i.e. extra stewarding, police etc.

Don't know if that's a good thing or not
The way we are playing it could put the 3500 off for life

My eldest is in his second year at Manchester Uni and he has attended a few early Champions League games as they get an offer of £10 a ticket through Student Union. But yes our players should be out and about around the schools and offering tickets as well. I remember Bradford Bulls (Northern as they were then!!) used to drop off 20/30 free tickets before every home game to encourage kids to attend.

And yet the said costs don't allow for either the reported 14k or actual 11k (attending) ST holders - or do they ? ;)

They'll be a level of variable cost. It may be x @ 11k, y @ 14k, and z @19k so assuming the additional variable costs for Saturday are less than the additional 4.5k £1 tickets then happy days (financially)

I would say it's a little different at the level you are at these days. We get exposed to so much more football than we did even 20 years ago let alone further back. Just think back to just after Italia 90 and remember how little football we got exposed to if we didn't attend our local team's games. ITV would have the odd Division One (as it was then) league game, we would get some FA cup matches and then the Division One highlight show and that was about it. But through Sky and the PL rights, Channel 4 and Football Italia and ITV with European/Uefa/Cup Winners cups it started increasing our exposure to both other teams in England and further afield. City are having to now compete with so many other teams they wouldn't have in the past and unless they have a parent who is a City fan the more glamorous teams winning the more prestigious events are always going to be a big draw. I'm not sure City players turning up at a local school or giving our free shirts is going to persuade them they should go watch City on a Saturday rather than illegally streaming the Man City game.

Even around 1990-92 we had Aldershot player Koo Dumbuya come into our School to give a talk and he ended up coaching us for a while as part of a Coaching scheme he was on for the FA and that didn't turn us all into Shots fans. We didn't switch who we supported or stop going to Farnborough games when we wanted to see live football. Farnborough and Aldershot are so close that its not like the Recreation Ground was any harder to get to than Farnborough's Cherrywood Lane (Looking it up right now its 10mins from where I lived by car to the Recreation Ground and 8mins to Cherrywood Lane) so if that didn't work on us then and kids now have way more access to regularly watching top teams around the world I don't see it working on them.

Free tickets may be slightly better but how many would they have to hand out for it to have any noticeable impact?

In fairness that is not what I was saying. I was making 2 examples of ticket prices that have made a difference. One in the PL / Champions League and one in Rugby League. I am not suggesting we give loads of free tickets away.

As a club we need to 're-engage' with fans and there are many ways of doing that as has been highlighted by other posters. Last season we had nearly 19k season ticket holders and that went down to 14k but if there has been a significant uptake for this weekend then it shows interest is still there.....need to get the product right on the pitch though....latest Parker article saying Hopkin has said recruitment been wrong...quelle suprise!! Mentioned that Hopkin was now picking his own players to look at, not by committee....that says loads as well.....
