It's odd how REFS are being blamed for not using monitors but this article says it was the CLUBS that voted for that in the summer (though it seems they've all changed their minds). As with all things in football (finance), you get the feeling there are powerbrokers in the shadows taking decisions based on self interest while letting those at the coalface take the flak from fans and pundits.

Had to laugh at MOTD letting what sounded like the whole Sheff Utd ground chanting of "F*ck VAR" get through their censoring system. I think they're one of the clubs reckoned to have lost out significantly to VAR, though today was arguably correct. To the best of my knowledge, Watford have lost points unfairly to VAR in 4 games now (also not today's Liverpool game, though).
The goal in Burnley v Newcastle was most contentious yet. Was it a foul? (I thought yes.) Ref gives dead ball and changes it to corner - but neither of those were right! The ball never completely crossed the line when it stopped and the defender rolled off it !!! The reverse angle showed about an inch of the ball was still hanging over the back of the line. He could have jumped up and played on if the ref had not already blown. I can forgive the ref and lino but the VAR lot bottled it.

VAR overturn penalty for Liverpool in world club final but then give a free kick after blatant contact on Mane's ankle?
Another wtf were they thinking moment, Rafinha got his yellow card chalked off when it cold easily be red.
*edit- been told the ref checked it and overturned his own decision here, he's had a shocker this game.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand... -

It was Harald Schumacher lite, only just though. Definite red. -
The problem with VAR isn't factual decisions being made like that, its the lack of consistency on other issues. Things like the whole 'Handball in build up to a goal' which for most of the season has been zero tolerance but over the last month we have had a mix of mainly zero tolerance and then some where its deemed 'not an obvious mistake by the ref'Stop hovering to collapse... On the pitchside monitors, its been stated that the refs decided not to use them (and the clubs were also against them). I don't personally see how it improves anything really, why is the onfield ref going to have a different opinion to the video ref outside the fact the video ref has a bit more time and more and bigger screens. The ref gives his opinion to the video ref so its not like its a decision the video ref makes in isolation. It's just going to see another 3-5mins added onto every decision and almost certainly come to the same outcome 9/10Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... It was clubs that voted not to have the delay of using pitchside monitors.
I disagree entirely that it's mostly offsides annoying people. The alleged fouls in build-up, arguable handballs, and was he touched or not penalty decisions are just as bad. It's just that there's been a rash of tight offside calls in the last couple of weeks. (Incidentally, I think the table in my earlier link must only be offsides since Watford lists only one decision against when I reckon they have had 4 or 5 and they have actually cost them points.) -

I believe a more experienced referee is more likely to get the decision correct, so by going to a monitor you have the best person making the decision from the best information. I also believe that a person is more likely to overrule their own call, rather than someone else telling someone they are wrong.
I think we will see a number of changes with VAR next season and expect the pitchside monitor to be used a lot more. -
Burnley vs Man Utd & Arsenal vs Chelseas - Micheal Oliver (248 Matches as Ref, 15 this season)
West Ham vs Leicester - Martin Atkinson (395 Matches, 17 this season)
Liverpool vs Wolves - Simon Hooper (First inexperienced one, 10 matches last season, 6 so far this season)
Man City vs Sheffield United - Stuart Attwell (104 matches, 10 this season)
Norwich vs Spurs - Chris Kavanagh ( 54 matches and 14 this season, same number this season as Kevin Friend who was the main Ref)
Watford vs Villa - Jonathan Moss (213 matches, 13 this season. More than the Ref Simon Hooper who has 16 matches in total, 6 this season)
Saints vs Palace - Andre Mariner (321 matches, 12 this season. Match ref Madley has refed just 8 PL matches in total)
Newcastle vs Everton Craig Pawson ( 145 matches, Less than match ref mason who has 270 but Pawson has been match ref for 11 matches this season vs Masons 9)
Brighton vs Bournemouth - Graham Scott (61 matches, Match ref Paul has 69)
They are mostly highly experienced, sometimes you might have one who has less experience but that also happens with match refs and the other match officials as they obviously have to be given a chance to learn on the job.
I'm also not sure refs are the type of people to overrule their decision. It was a big problem with officials behind the goals. They couldn't make decisions, they could only try and help the ref and it was a well-documented issue that refs would largely go with how they saw it even if the other official had a better view which is why they got a rep of doing nothing. They also simply don't have proper access to the footage, they have smaller screens and rely on the VAR official to show them the right footage which slows it down and puts pressure on the ref to make a snap decision to get the game restarted (especially as they don't add the time on)Stop hovering to collapse... However, he should have been sent off for serious foul play given how his challenge ended up taking Alonso out around chest height having missed the ball. I'm not sure how (a) Taylor originally gave a FK to Spurs and (b) VAR didn't tell him to send off Gazzaniga for SFP. -
Hallelujah! A ref has used a pitch side monitor to review an incident and send someone off in an FA Cup tie. I presume this opens the flood gates to some better decisions - but some longer delays.

And how do VAR HQ send somebody off without the ref checking? "Come here lad. You're off!" "Why?" "I've been told serious foul play." "But I slipped - didn't you see me slip?" "Er .... actually I did not see anything. I'll ask the guys at VAR HQ to review it again". 4 minutes later:"They say you did not slip." "I did - you must check it yourself." Another 4 minutes later. "I can't tell whether you slip or not. It's a maybe. Here's a yellow." (or red, depending on ref).12 minutes lost and a dodgy decision given. VAR does not rule out dodgy/subjective decisions. It only causes delays and kills atmosphere.
VAR should be binned. It's been nice watching most of the FA Cup Rd 3 games without it. Atmosphere at those with it have been spoiled by reviews for perfectly good goals and some decisions that are still dodgy. -
All having the ref check it is add another layer that adds more time onto it and the final decision goes to the person with the worst screen for making a decision onStop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand... -

Premier League fans will protest against VAR in the InOnTen protest next month. It takes place on 22-24th Feb where fans will leave stadiums empty for the first 10 minutes.

I think the idea is barking up the right tree but it might not work well in practice. Health and safety people might refuse to start games if they think thousands will rush in at 3:10.
