In what sense do you think Bradford has a lot going for it, Simon?

It probably has the worst road and rail connections of any major city in the country. The industry that it was built around has gone. All the big white collar employers have gone bust or relocated elsewhere. Most of the decent architecture has been demolished. It's only ten miles from Leeds, which sucks in all the investment and development. It has no restaurants (other than curry houses) or nightlife to speak of, because the majority inner city population doesn't drink or eat non-halal food. The inner city population is generally poor and those with money on the outskirts go to Leeds or Harrogate, so the city centre cannot attract or retain decent retailers. The university no longer attracts young people from around the country. Etc etc.
I'm very attached to my adopted home area, but I am struggling to see how it breaks out of the cycle of decline it's stuck in. It's hard to see what will attract employers, shoppers and visitors back into Bradford centre.

 

Thats the best description on here of what Bradford is in 21st century. A dead end with no real way of change because it quite simply can't. A city hanging it's get if jail free card on the city of culture when cultures by definition generally don't mix. Unless you're on the outskirts it's generally a run down area with no unique selling point.

 

You need to get out mate. Best thing I ever did. Don't be trapped, just do it. You only get one crack at this.

That's often the way.

 

It's hard to see a way out of the decline but it can be done. The regeneration and revitalisation of Bordeaux in the last 20-30 years can serve as inspiration and aspiration for any post industrial city which finds itself on hard times.

 

Has to be one of the most segregated cities in the UK. No cultures really mix and one of the reasons the City is a mess. It’s the council’s greed and the lack of government funding that’s done it.

How it manage to get Leeds Rd a gateway into the City as it is I will never know.

If you live in the outskirts of Bradford you are ok but the city and with a 1 mile or so it’s a dump.

Capital Of Culture for what? Or licking Boris’s behind and letting the government send all the unwanted from the south here.

I challenged Bradford Council on this and they didn’t deny it. The city is a joke!

Let’s see what happens to the money they will receive- nothing!

Council's greed? Please explain what you mean by this. The council is skint, yes, but how is it greedy?

 

when a hotel in Bradford advertises that “ it’s on 20 minutes from Leeds “ then you no it’s a shithole ................ as for folk bigging it up go down and do some shopping in that slum 10am on Saturday then come back and say how great it is ..................this City have been fooked over for the last 60 years and this is the result of it ............. as for City of Culture let’s so how much ends up going in the right avenues because I guarantee it won’t end up where it should be going ............... the fooking Broadway our big super store to rival anything in Leeds is emptying on a weekly basis because frankly nobody wants to spend time in that cesspit

A simple question. How would you do it? It's geographical location doesn't lend itself to being regenerated and it has no real natural selling points. Industry would find it counter productive to move here due to poor infrastructure. Pathetic road and rail links, the negatives keep adding up.

 

The Leeds Road 'gateway' into Bradford is one of the most depressing sites you could wish to see.

 

Isn't it just. Even Akbar’s is now out of date, run down and isn’t what it was.

Oh and that’s the traffic to get down there is a so slow.

 

Because they always have the begging bowl out and instead of looking to make money in the right way they get money from the government to take in the refugees and all the unwanted from the South.

Look in to it! Leeds says No! Bradford says yes! The public of Bradford need to wise up!

 

No. Where do get that nonsense from? It's not rocket science - It's a poor city. It relies heavily on government funding and specific grants which were all massively cut or removed altogether during Osborne's austerity years. Regeneration would require massive investment. The council simply doesn't have that sort of money and there's no real likelihood of the private sector doing so. The government talks about levelling up, but continues to spend squillions on London and the south while places like Bradford rot.

 

The Broadway was a massive mistake. It was never going to compete with Trinity, Briggate and the Victoria Quarter. All it's done is replicate the shops that were already in Darley Street and the Arndale, killed the top end of town and destroyed the possibility of linking Forster Square and the Interchange.
