Think that's Palmer.

When you look at the central midfield as a bunch it doesn't fill you with much confidence but when you break it down the players fill the positions and the starters look pretty decent. You won't find many better midfields in League 2 than Scannel Palmer Akpan/Anderson Ismail.

 

I'd be happy with Scannell , Palmer, A N other, Ismail/Gibson especially with Donaldson and Vaughan upfront. Just that CM position, its weak.

 

It all depends which Akpan or Anderson turn up.

If Bowyer is going to be playing a 4-3-3 then we need more centre mids than we do centre backs.

Devine is a squad filler. Cheap to maintain. And is he REALLY that bad? Whenever I seen him he has looked ok.

Lets not forget we have dropped down a league so he might be more suited to this level.

 

I think his intent is to build a squad with enough flexibility to play different systems. We have players who can play multiple positions - Gibson, Mellor, AOC, Longridge, Riley, Ismail.

In midfield we have Akpan, Devine, Anderson, Palmer, Gibson as an option, and possibly Reeves and Colville. Numbers aren’t a problem but quality is. If we’re flush, I’d like to see at least one more in there - a hard man. And I wouldn’t mind seeing someone more creative too, hopefully with Akpan moving on.

I still think we need a quality left winger too.

2-3 more of quality would take us from being ‘there or thereabouts’ to a side who can roll over teams.

 

Well that's two of us, yet I'm told we don't need one as Bowyer will play 4 - 3 - 3 and we have Scannel if we want to change the system.

 

I will be staggered if GB doesn't realise we are a couple of bits of quality short of being real contenders this season - interesting in new season analysis I think it is was Bet Victors assessment that we are still carrying too many from last season to be seriously placed as one of the favourites, many seem to be going for Mansfield as number 1 option

 

I think that’s fair tbh. We might see a new Riley, a more mature Gibson and possibly a more effective Doyle. I don’t think we’ll see anything more from Akpan or Anderson.

Fact is, Mellor won’t play centre half unless we have an influx of injuries but it didn’t stop his name being bandied around when I suggested wanting another CB. Naming him and AO’C as potential fillers of the DM role is no different

 

True. I never said they inspire confidence. But then, I’m not the one handing out contracts to them.

 

I think Anderson will start tomorrow and if he continues the way he ended the season I will be happy with that

 

Except Mellor has played centre half on more than one occasion but to my knowledge he's never played as a holding midfielder.

 

Brilliant. If I wrote a comment like your last sentence, I’d be accused of being an arse etc, but you think it’s acceptable?

More importantly, if you think 3 midfielders in a 4-3-3 all have to be defensive and not creative, then you need to take up a different hobby...!
We have Devine, Akpan, Anderson (plus AO’C and Mellor if desperate) for the defensive roles. We then have Palmer, Gibson, Reeves (when fit), Colville and McCartan for the more attacking roles. If playing with wingers (in a 4-4-2) or opting for a diamond, we then include the likes of Scannell, Wood and Ismail into the mix

 

Nope never said that about defensive midfielders. You jump to conclusions to fit your narrative, put a spin on it and then end up arguing or banned. You never learn.

4 CB's is enough for a 4-4-2
4 CM's isnt enough for a 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 (which are Bowyers favoured formations based on pre season)

Hes not that bad but conversely hes not that good. Hes steady at best. Hes never going to be good enough to really affect a game for me, and with that I dont see the point in his wage. Let's hope the drop in level helps him show up to be more effective

 

solid enough without doing anything spectacular. you always need one or two players like that where you know they wont drop a clanger or do anything mental, just steady away and does the basics. Especially over the course of a season as injuries take their toll.

 

Absolutely spot on
