Imagine all the extra season tickets we'd sell to women by signing this guy.

I'm not so sure. I honestly think that if the club was open about a significant investment that was designed around creating a sustainable 'conveyor belt' of young talent, but that it would take at least 3-4 years to bear fruit, I think most would buy into it.

What people never bought into was Rahic's obviously madcap plan, which tried to kid everyone that our 'youth is the way forward' plan based on signing the likes of Pybus, Patrick and Gunner, was ever going to work.

This follows on from some of the points in the thread about training ground. The only way in the long term we will ever be able to progress into the championship is by producing our own players and finding ones released to early by other clubs.
In order to do this it needs money to be spent on youth and scouting and with out unlimited finance the money would have to be diverted from the first team. Not many fans not withstanding what they say now would put up with that

Why would we dream about being a perennial League Two team with a pointlessly expensive academy system again?

The comparison is ridiculous, fans would lose their s**t is we modelled ourself on a bog standard League 2 side. Imagine that!

Who have they really developed that has gone on to bigger and better things? I can't of many/any.

I don't recall us ever having an expensive academy system. I do recall two examples of trying to run an academy on a shoestring and diverting resources away from the first team squad. Both of those examples under Archie and then Rahic were doomed to failure because we didn't have the money to run them properly other than by weakening the first team.

The simple reason why we need to invest in one is for the future. I doubt we'll ever be able to compete with teams in Div 1 (and probably now in Div 2) whose owners are willing to inject their own money into the club to subsidise the playing budget. This type of owner tend to be fans with deep pockets and are willing to spend their own money on their club. We don't have the luxury of that at the moment and I don't see that changing in the near future. And while we have good crowds, we also have low ticket prices and that allows us to about break even. That's our 'sustainable' money whilst many Div 1 and some Div 2 clubs run the 'sugar daddy' model. Although there is no guarantee of success even with a sugar daddy, we are at a disadvantage and looking at recent promotions from Div 1 will show how successful the sugar daddy model is compared to our own.

Therefore we need to look to the future and see whether we can create better players and player sales with a different approach .... by investing in the future just like any other business which wants to grow and develop.

Think we have to concentrate on players that will strengthen us. Trouble with bringing players on is that there are no guaranteed outcomes and there would still be a need for serious investment.A luxury we don't have much of, better to raise our 1st team game.

I haven't looked this up but forgive me if I'm wrong - but investing in an academy is great but we need to be able to sweep up the young talent. Look at the clubs that we have near us whos network is far greater than what ours is!

    Huddersfield
    Leeds
    Blackburn
    Man City
    Man United

Just a few off the top of my head, these talented players will opt for the above over us, what is the need for investing if we can't yet bring the calibre of youth in?

On the subject of the academy side. ALL 2nd year scholars have been released. Although I know we're expecting good things from couple of this seasons 1st years.

That's all well and good but to make Colchester an example kind of rules out the argument. Who have they developed and why are they still in League 2. I think the most important point and has been since Parky took over is that if you have the right manager with the right backroom staff and mentality then that will, as proved, get you results. The training ground issue has only been brought up in the last 2 weeks because of a few comments from an ex, seemed to be fine with Parky and Mccall who both had good records despite us not owning our training ground or producing youngsters to sell on.

Is that true or something you saw on Twitter? Someone posted the same yesterday and apparently isn't not true.

I don't agree that we should be investing in youth as the deck is now stacked so heavily in favour of big clubs that the best players under 16 simply aren't going to remain in our academy. They don't have to, and a new facility won't sway the very best.

The days of Crewe Alexandre bringing through reams of Championship level academy graduates are over.

Colchester are proving you can bring graduates through at League Two level. I'm sure some bigger clubs are bringing through graduates consistently of League One quality too - Barnsley, maybe.

But I do not see how this is something we should be chasing ourselves, much less dreaming about.

Outside the big Premier League and Championship clubs, academies rarely pay off.

I'll eat my words if Colchester win League Two with kids though. But I can't see it.

    Another example
A L1 club that's produced and sold on
    Bradley Dack
    Harry Arter
    Ezri Konta
    Karlan Grant
    Darren Randolph
    Paul Konchesky
    Jonjo Shelvey
    Ademola Lookman
    Carl Jenkinson
    and might just get promoted

I think you will find thats what we are at this very moment in time. A bog standard league 2 side that owns neither its own training facilities or stadium. Good luck selling that Stefan.

I was on about Colchester who've spend £4m on a training ground yet are still in League 2 and don't really produced/develop and sell on players.
