We will be able to attract a better standard of No2 keeper if there is a potential path to the first team than we can if that path is blocked by the current Rep Ireland keeper who has been a mainstay of our starting XI for the last 2 years.

You could say that about any signing. There are always going to be a number of factors involved which could complicate a deal. For example, we have Robinson who can play LW, he looks to have a lot of potential and is the ideal player for the owners model. Does that mean that we shouldn't be speaking to Seedorf because he might not want to come here due to the fact that he wouldn't be a guaranteed starter? Of course not. You can still try to sign players in line with your current circumstances. So in this instance the circumstances would be that the player in question would have solid competition for his place and going back to the keeper example, it would be that player X would be a bench warmer barring injuries, which is perfectly possible. Ben Williams was an able backup and signed with the knowledge that he probably wouldn't be a starter and so did Raider and Sattelmair. Dieng hasn't signed his contract and we are still bringing in midfielders. It's called being proactive. Just because someone is yet to sign a contract doesn't mean that recruitment comes to a standstill.

 

If Doyle stays, nothing changes. If Doyle leaves, we'd be looking for someone who is as good as Doyle so the standard of backup is going to be the same regardless.

I'd like us to go for Forest Green striker Christian Doidge who certainly knows where the back of the net is. He's got an eye for goal, physical, good in the air , pacey and holds the ball up well and he's only 25. He's 6"2 so will give us more height up front and defensively and he's scored 40 goals in 73 games for Forest Green. He would command a decent fee but I think we should push the boat out as if he does well for us we would recoup the fee tenfold.

As far as I'm aware Cardiff didn't put a bid in for him ,and it was a Gloucestershire newspaper that stated Cardiff were interested in him and we're willing to pay upto a million. I think it was just some journalist filling up space on the back pages of the newspaper.

Ah fair enough, that would explain why it seemed a bizarre assertion... my apologies!

 

We need a better number Two than last season because Doyle is likely to be away on international duty a lot.
