Parky played him in Midfield, so obviously didn't rate him defensively.
McCall liked attacking full back defending not being the priority.
Mowbray didn't actually take him as they got far better.
Grayson didn't have another RB, even then he had him in midfield early on, even letting Chicksen play there.
These managers obviously don't share your view that he is a good defender, except for maybe McCall who wanted attacking football over defensive solidarity.

and Rahic wanted to sell. quite simply thats it. McCall wouldn't sanction the transfer unless he got a replacement. but we never got a second offer after the first one.

McCall and Tony never fell out, and Tony didn't refuse to play.
he fell out with the board, and Rahic wanted to sell him. when it became clear he wasn't going to get a transfer fee for him he came back into first team reckoning.
