I can only comment on my position but I’d feel just as short-changed. But ‘same criticism’? I haven’t criticised the owners. I’m saying they won’t be excused if it blows up in their faces.

Let’s be honest, they only got the gig because nobody else wanted it or matched up to Edin’s standards. That is widely reported

Wasn’t particularly saying you had criticised the owners but there is a sense that people are waiting to pounce if results don’t go well. I imagine the primary criticism will be similar to your point previously “unknown, untried manager” “out of their depth” etc etc I genuinely don’t believe that would be the same if we had a Gerrard or Lampard because of their name.

I think that’s partly fair given their experiences and knowledge from playing at the top of the game for 10+ years (which is far superior to MC) but if people are going solely on the level of managerial experience these guys have, then they are all the same.

All blame from me will be on the management team if this goes badly. They took the job, they back themselves to succeed. If they weren’t good enough they shouldn’t have taken the job. The board have backed them. Now it’s their time to deliver.

Very true Alex. Don't know your age but a few of our world cup winning team went into management, all ending up with roughly the same result. On the other hand, a young guy who had just made the England team and had to retire through injury made quite a success of management. Young age meant nothing to Cloughie; he knew he was good enough and strong enough to see his ideas through.

A point I've mad before as well. Of that WC squad only Ball had anything like a managerial career, though Clough hadn't won a cap since 1959 and retired in 1964.

Many who are outraged over Collins getting the job would be creaming themselves over a Gerrard or Lampard, even though Collins' experiences in the game are far more relevant to a club in our position.

And importantly his experience at our level.

An ex Premiership player who had come through a Premiership club academy wouldn't have the knowledge that MC does.

Collins seems to be up with tactics having recently passing his badges and by his own words studying what other teams and coaches do. I also hope he realises that no matter what system we play with it’s down to individual performances and motivation. As others have said he needs to use the experience of Abbott because flexibility is important

Not sure Park but I thought I read that he'd passed his badges some time back.

Team analysis by respective team local journalists go for usual suspects for promotion and relegation but local Gillingham paper predicts City as one of the three promoted sides.

    Hope they're right!

Gerrard and Lampard have played at the highest level possible, were legends for their clubs, are well known in football across the globe and as a result will more than likely have the respect of their players and everyone around them, which is absolutely integral in management. Whether Collins will be able to do the same is clearly more of a question mark.

I'd be more concerned if the appointment of Collins had led to our recruitment being poorer this summer than last year but the fact is, the exact opposite is true. If the players coming in aren't concerned about Collins then it's not something I'm going to lose sleep over either.

So have Neville, scholes, Keane. What they don’t know about the game is not worth knowing, however how they portray that to the players is. Nowhere to be seen on the managerial merry go round. Great players don’t necessarily make great managers

His test doesn't come in pre season. It comes when the chips are down and the players need a source of inspiration. I'd say that is a far bigger question mark with Collins than it is with Lampard or Gerrard.

I never said that great players make great managers- read my post. Purely from a respect/motivation point of view, Gerrard or Lampard would have the upper hand over Collins if they were to manage a club at this level. It's not the be all and end all, but it is one aspect of management which would make the pair of them less of a risk than Collins, hence a less critical reception.

I really don't understand how people can't see the difference. Steven Gerrard and Kim Jong Un's personal trainer both have had exactly the same level of success as club managers so are exactly the same. Not though are they.
