Being a a bit of traveller to Europe, quite a bit in Poland, I'm trying to work out what I'd miss if I left for pastures new? Reading a few threads on social media about folk who'd emigrated to other places such as Spain, France amongst others the consensus is pretty much that most have never regretted leaving.
So I'm trying to work out what's kinda good about the UK. I don't know enough about local things such as education, health care and social services etc but find getting around so much easier on fit for purpose transport systems and the cities I visit are generally more interesting than UK cities. Plus the weather here is pretty much miserable for most of the year.
What would anyone genuinely miss about the UK if they had to leave?

Myself and Mrs bbb’s master plan has always been to move to Tenerife when we get older.

We go there every February and the majority of the people in the complex we go to are retired couples who go from very early January to late March/early April.
Hoping to acquire a property over there in the next 12 months which we will use for normal holidays and then possibly a bit longer.
It’s a while off at the moment as my youngest is only 12 but when it’s logistically and financially possible we will be off like a shot.
Initially we will do the 12 week winter thing but hopefully it will be permanent at some point.

Absolutely nothing to keep us in England for.

The thing I find annoying is people that move to Spain for the good life because the UK is shit etc but still pop back every few months to collect their repeat prescriptions for free off the NHS. They do this by keeping an official address here. If it is so bad make the break, not got a problem with people doing that. If the grass is greener then move, not an issue but don’t have both. Yes you could argue you have paid in previously but in my eyes if you are not playing by the rules you are just as bad as other breaking rules to claim things they are not entitled to

I'll never have the finance to move but I can understand folk who do, especially if your from Cities in the north of England. I find down the South coast to be nice but generally now find England a pretty soulless place. There are some lovely spots such as the lake and peak District or North to mid Wales but the lure of a place in Spain or France would see me never coming back.

I suppose the balancing act would be what would be the long term plan if something horrendous happened. Never looked into but legally what position would you be in if you suddenly became seriously ill and wanted to come home? Would the NHS look after you or would it depend how long you had lived abroad?

I know that is dark but it is the type of thing that after the stuff that has happened to my parents over the past year cross my mind and what would have happened if they had retired to Spain

You dont stop being a UK citizen just cos you moved abroad

My uncles lived in North Carolina for 40 years but still has access to the NHS etc

The NHS look after immigrants that come to live here lol

Access to NHS isn’t based on citizenship though it is based on residence and various other things

He could be covered by one of the exclusions or he could be committing fraud.

without a lot more detail I obviously could t comment which of the two camps he falls in.

but that was one of my original points about people that move away saying this country is going to the dogs etc, not that i am saying your uncle has said that or falls in that camp but I do know people that do but then still pop back to collect their regular meds, some still have a NHS dentist.

I’ll be honest the NHS are shocking at checking if people are entitled to free treatment at all. Millions would be saved if proper checks were in place and I’d guess a lot of that would be saved from people that have moved abroad and aren’t aware that they are no longer entitled to stuff. Some people are aware and play the system registering at families addresses etc but others are just not aware.

I would miss my daughter and grandkids too much to go live abroad.

Oh, and I'd miss PG Tips tea!

If you go live abroad how much access to the NHS do you actually have?

Would make sense, going to live in another country generally means you are working and paying tax into their economy.

    There must be some leeway

It can't be fair that you cannot use the NHS if you decide to retire abroad

You've paid into it all your working life presumably.. you can still claim your UK state pension abroad so why not the NHS

If your retired you wouldn't be paying into it anyway so can't see why it would matter

Could be. As I said there are a list of exceptions so pensioners could be one, but have a feeling it will not be a straight forward thing that covers every pensioner and will depend on personal circumstances etc and exact position etc work history etc etc etc etc, paperwork to complete ..........
