There is absolutely no reference made to where we end up this season. It makes no assertions, predictions or inferences.

All it does is references that our early season home form has been very good. Surely a response to that should just be positive. Why does it need to be challenged negatively. Mentality of some is so boring.

If we had had an awful start at home I can guarantee nobody would be saying 'yeah but let's see where we end up'. People would just be crowing about how sh*t we are.

Ah yes, the nearly season. And how exactly did it end when Dolan had an even better start at home than Bowyer in the current season?

I'm sure that having a good start, especially at home is great for the morale of the squad and a boost for the fans. But irrespective of how well we've done so far, the real measure of success is where we finish up at the end of the season in all games rather than how we have started the season at home.

As @sambantam82@sambantam82 pointed out, there isn't a comparison between this season and then, it's just that the Dolan season was the last time we had had a better start at home in a league season. What happened after that, and what happens now bear no relation to each other.

Anyway, to dissect a sentence later on in your post, I agree we haven't put in an outstanding performance, but consistent? I think yes, we have definitely been consistent in several games (including Saturday).

Newport have been in and around the play offs all season until a recent 4 game losing streak, and you can see they are set up in a similar fashion to ourselves - but what was noticeable is that they were a poor version of what Bowyer has put together. We were better than Newport in every department, if only a little bit, and while we didn't create too many clear cut chances, we could have won 3-0 on another day. We didn't, but we did win anyway.

We have made some of the better sides in our division look average, leading to the assumption the division is terrible. I say, again, it's not. It's just we're good without being flashy or devastating.

I got arrested at that game for trying to reenter the ground. I asked a steward to let me back in after searching for a friend who was a bit worse for drink. He let me in and then tried to throw me out for some strange reason. The police took me to a portacabin where I was cautioned about my behaviour. The portacabin had a window at the back and as I was being cautioned the twot I had been looking for was dancing in the window. Fond memories.

On the back of last season and the turmoil we all ‘enjoyed’, it is a remarkable stat and performance. I can’t say I’m exactly enjoying our performances or L2 as a whole, but credit where it’s due, we could not have expected this record and should acknowledge it’s been a great start considering where we were.

There are various shades, I suppose, of consistency, but regardless of the quality of individual match performances, overall we have indeed been very consistent within this season, and in comparison to our most recent good seasons -- the playoff seasons of 15/16 and 16/17, and the start of 17/18 (in terms of points, and goals for and against).

For this season, we have -- with one match still to go -- in our second 10-game segment matched the wins, draws, and points of our first segment, scoring one fewer goal, and conceding the same amount. Our current pace has us headed for the playoffs at the least; in some years it has been enough for automatic promotion. Given that we've maintained it now for (almost) 20 matches, perhaps a bit of optimism isn't misplaced.

Even I'm beginning to feel a little optimistic, and I was certainly one who expected/predicted a mid-table finish for this season.

Keep this home form up and it could end up a better season. Though the football that season was immense and much more entertaining. But that was the second division then.
Remember Lee Sinnott making two blunders that ultimately cost us promotion. Ipswich at home last game and Boro away second play off leg.

I called Scunthorpe as climbing the table when we beat them and they were either bottom or second bottom.

I said that it wasn't a bad draw because they were in a false position - didn't you give me pelters?

Just an example of how silly it is to judge results against sides that might be lower in the table without looking at the context.

Now when we played Oldham, THAT was a club in a right pickle. We stuck three past those, and they didn't even play that badly.

Shame you couldn't have actually witnessed that season yourself. Apart from a few dodgy games and dodgy referring-especially at Man City away when Hendrie was wrongly sent off that was one of the best all round city teams I have witnessed. And some great memories to boot. So whilst it didn't end up brilliant it was actually brilliant to watch. If Hendrie hadn't been sent off I reckon we would have got automatic promotion. Fine margins.

That's fair enough, but a bit negative. I don't remember the Dolan season, but surely it should still be applauded?

It's not at all negative. It's a realistic perspective based on what really happened in the nearly season and not some glorified view of that season. To focus on one aspect of the season, ie the home results for the first 9 games is being unrealistic. The season is 46 games long and involves playing at 23 grounds other than VP. For those who lived through the Dolan period, the nearly season was a major disappointment and to pretend otherwise would be folly. I understand why some people are focusing on the results at home to date rather than other crieria because it paints an optimistic picture. But let's be honest, it's difficult to think of a result at home so far which came from an outstanding and consistent performance. I hope we see some of these in the remainder of the season but given performances to date, it does involve hope (and that's not some obtuse reference to Akpan ;) ).

What you mean is take the two players I've heard about because they've scored goals. To be honest you can say that about a lot of teams. Take away their two best players and they are average

Well one is our player and the other is another clubs player. That's the difference.

Their best players don't belong to them.

Let's not forget Terry Dolan inherited a very good squad which he saw with a change here and there would make us a very competitive team, the major decision was playing with a sweeper rather than the orthodox back 4, Dave Evans took to it like a duck takes to water.
Now the squad Gary Bowyer inherited is a far different situation and although we have hardly been breath taking to watch I'll personally sacrifice that for promotion.

How dare you come on here with your facts, trying to spread your positivity. It is clear Bowyer is a terrible manager, and we will finish nowhere near the playoffs... (sarcasm, incase it needed pointing out).

Best statistically and fair play. Not great to watch, but I've said before that if we go up then I dont care what it takes

Fair play to the Bowyer era but bloody eck, the football was miles better to watch under Dolan. Though it was second tier football, not fourth division as we have now..

Mind we did get stuffed 4 nil at Portman Road on this same weekend and we know how that season ended....
