Sunderland's hoofball v Portsmouth's hoofball tonight was a poor game.
Jon McLaughlin was the calmest player on the pitch.

For football reasons the two best teams through to the play of final, though Charlton made hard work of it against a very average side. Portsmouth are painful to watch with the long ball shite, i think we will see a good open final.

Just reading on Wiki (not the best for facts) but it does say Sunderland made Maja a better offer but he wanted to leave.

Recently watched the Netflix documentary. Felt for Grayson a bit. Anyone would struggle with that squad and that director, Bain was it? Seemed a total joke and not much clue.

As for this season, if you can keep a similar squad and add 5 or 6 quality players and you’ll be right up there. Like Millwall did when they lose a few years ago.

Get some energy in midfield. Cattermole/leadbitter May be heroes in Sunderland but they are so slow. Them two together is why I think you don’t create much. Compare that to Aribo and Cullen and you can see why they did so well.

You're correct with all of that I think. Bain was horrific and he took a healthy £1m a year salary from us and had to be paid £4m to leave the club at the start of this season. He didn't care one bit. I agree with Catts and Leadbitter - although cattermole offers a bit of edge, he's definitely found his level at League One. I've said for years he isn't a Premier League footballer and it took two back-to-back relegations for people to realise that. We definitely need some energy in midfield, it's what the fans were begging for all January.

On the plus side it's just been announced that the club are in no debt. When the new owners took over at the end of last season we were in £200m+ worth of debt. Always look on the bright side etc.

This. Refused to play too if we didn't let him leave. He left the club with no choice but to sell him. Also messed the club around and waited until the end of January to announce this, meaning we had to 'panic buy' and overspend on Will Grigg.

Just when I have come to terms with, embraced even, div. 4 you want to drag me back up into the giddy heights of div. 3? Humph! :brig:

I make it that the range for auto-promoted sides since the play-off system came in runs from a low of 79 (2005/6) to a high of 96 (2017/8). Those were the actual points gained by the lowest auto-promoted side. (If you want to just look at gaining 1 point more than the highest-placed playoff side, then you can take a few points off each end of the range.) The 96 has only happened once in 33 years of play-offs; there are a pair of 94s as well. So as you say, unless it is an exceptional year 90+ should do it.

I think Sunderland have massively underachieved this season, given their resources and the enormity of their club for the division they're in. Nothing less than a top two finish will have been expected for Sunderland and rightly so.

If they fail to go up it will be a major fail of a season and their slump continues.

I would call it more of a bottoming out (they didn't have PP to get them promoted). There have been lots of big clubs who have spent more than one season in league one and who weren't in as much doom and gloom, and had more talented squads

I watched the match, it was not the best display of LG 1 football that is for sure, but really Portsmouth had no answer to Sunderland, who are nothing special.

Just a bit of trivia, but both goalkeepers in last night's match are former Harrogate Town players.

One of the worst games of football i've seen for a while. Sunderland are the better team, Portsmouth have looked bang average every time i've seen them, their hoofball made Parky look like Guardiola.

Police just come on the pitch and told the referee that the penalties had to be taken at the Charlton end, why ?.

Think it's because they were expecting a pitch invasion if Charlton won meaning it may have been hard to stop them getting over to the Doncaster fans had they been taken at the Doncaster end. Atleast if they are taken at the other end they can set up a wall of police/stewards in advance. Really unfair though and definately some sort of cheating imo.
