To be fair if you have a look on YouTube you can see all his goals this season for Motherwell, looks a tidy player from those and also can take set pieces.

 

Or court battle perhaps?

 

Jonny Williams would be an excellent signing. Not just for a midfield goal threat, but he's technically very good. Perfect for the role alongside Smallwood, pushing forward as a number 8 type.

 

Williams is 5/6 years younger than Adam Clayton.

 

Apparently turned down Wrexham and Northampton to sign 3yr contract with us.

29yr old so maybe length of contract deciding factor.

He was all over the pitch against us at their place. Annoyed me with his play acting all game but certainly not static like Clayton.

Have a look at his run for the goal too. Still looks very mobile to me and at 29 should have a few years left.

 

I'm hoping so. This is why I asked the question earlier as I think we desperately need to strengthen CM and I wasn't sure if JW had played there much.

Possibly leaves us slightly lightweight though and don't imagine he'll add much to the zonal system defensively!

Williams is a good player and has been hampered throughout his career with injuries which would be my major concern. If he's right he would be a good signing. Been a few now though that "have already signed" so I won't count my chickens.

 

Good. We need a couple of sh*t-houses in the side. We were far too passive last season.

 

Yer, he's 5'6 or 7 I think. Not tall. His track record suggests he's got more end product about him than some we had in the squad last season.

He's better suited to the central areas of the pitch. Competition for Walker or Central midfield I reckon. Not sure if he's played as a 10 or further forward before.

 

Yes it does. MC final showed us that really good teams can do this. Not so sure at our level.

Lot of assumptions that IF Williams signs he could sit in with Smallwood.

It would be interesting if AG resigns whether Smallwoods game time will be assured.

 

Interesting, but personally can't see Gilliead as a threat to Smallwood's position.

Gilliead is more of an engine, motoring around closing down the opposition and generally putting in the hard yards.

I'd think Smallwood would go back to defensive midfield with Clayton now gone, and hopefully he can recycle the ball to Williams more than Gilliead.

 

That's my thinking why AG may gain the minutes. But I'll probably be wrong

 

I suppose some of it will depend what formation we're playing - if we're playing 3 in the middle, AG and RS probably still play - pending other signings of course!

 

Is that not what most fans want from Smallwood?

 

I think Gilliead has been offered a one year deal and is just looking around to see if he gets offered anything longer elsewhere.

 

Why wouldn’t he have the legs at 29 you only had to watch him against us for the answer
