The Ridehalgh extension has a whiff of the Sutton/Angol/Hendrie ones from last season. I get it if they are cheaper than cheap options padding out you're squad, but that should be their ceiling if you want to challenge. I think that too, if a new LWB comes in it's probably around the deadline but a forward would need to be priority looking at the balance of the side as we go into Week 1.

I'm assuming the rule of signing players by 12pm on the Friday to allow them to feature on the Saturday is still a thing? Guessing we'll be about to set off to Crawley on Friday lunchtime.

I cannot imagine Avenue being able to afford him.

Hughes has already said that there will be no new signings before Crawley. He estimated that it would be around the middle of August

Let's hope it's not a couple of last minute panic signings on the evening of 31st August

Yes, aware of Hughes comments. Was more a question around anyones knowledge of the player signing deadline than wishing we had a player in.

Had a look since, same rule still applies this season.

I agree we win promotion or fail over 46 games, my point was making that substitution Banks for Platt was IMO the wrong call and as it turned out went completely against what he hope to achieve with the substitution keep the overall score 2 - 2 and play for penalties, BUT what was more annoying was that he'd done exactly the same sub against Gillingham and that also cost us dearly.
Yes it does seem strange that a creative player like Hughes who's career was all about scoring goals is such a cautious manager, and what was more annoying is when they were let off the leash we played some cracking football.

I think they have been aware of the player/s they want all summer and are prepared to wait for the parent club to release

A stupid decision which is incomprehensible when you look at the state of the match. It was one of several things that cost us including stopping playing after taking the lead in the first game when we were on top.

They turned out in force at Bell End Rd , that didn’t work out well either? On second thoughts….rather well!

A strikeforce of Cook, Oliver, Derbyshire, Smith and Pointon leaves me feeling underwhelmed. I can't imagine Cook repeating his tally from last season; Oliver has a fitness/injury question mark over him; Derbyshire will at best be used as an impact sub; Smith struggles to put together a lengthy string of appearances and Pointon, despite his showing in pre-season remains untested in the cut and thrust of league games. We are lacking another striker who might for example be needed if Cook is out of form or injured. For me that's a more important issue than recruiting another LWB or central defender.

By Taylor.... I'm assuming you mean Smith? I really dont fancy seeing Taylor up front :D

We have a weird strike balance. Cook and Oliver are probably well paid and have had the most success over the last 3 or 4 seasons, but in no way do I think they'd work as a partnership. Both need mobility around them at this stage of their careers which Derbyshire can offer in short spells but maybe not as a starter anymore. Smith is the one with legs but his experience is a worry for someone who turns 25 this season. He hasn't started more than 4 in a row since he was a teen at Barrow, so expecting him to suddenly be able to play 40+ times and score goals is more of a hope than an expectation.

Without Olivers injury, I reckon Hughes would have taken that 4 and the youth as last resorts, especially as our squad is technically full registration wise and we must be close to budget? But yes there is a bigger need for someone different up front than another left wing back at this moment.

Agree that Hughes will sit and wait, or at least I hope he does. Regarding Ridealgh, I don’t think he’s as bad as many make out. He’s not the wingback you’d expect to see, but as a defender if we changed formation, he’s as good if not better than anyone else at the club in the LB position. To be fair he never let us down defensively, but didn’t offer anything attacking wise.

I often think the terms fickle and football fan are synonymous :)

I have never booed a City team, but I have certainly expressed my frustration if play is poor or counterproductive, mainly with the poor sods who sit near me. Five minutes later I will be vocally congratulating the same player (s) for a brilliant bit of football.

Yes, Taylor Smith! But maybe Taylor is the solution as Luke Oliver was all those year ago. Taylor is big and strong, good in the air and slow - the ideal khazi league striker!

On a more serious point, I've always believed that Oliver's signing was a strange one. I could only rationalise it as a direct replacement for Cook. That clearly wasn't to be as Cook proved many of his critics wrong last season, including MH, and he became undroppaable. I doubt he will repeat his scoring record again this coming season. Unfortunately, even without his injury, Oliver doesn't complement Cook's style. Once he recovers from his injury, he might be used as an alternative to Cook but in doing so it would imo require further changes in the playing style to take advantage of Oliver's aerial strength. I don't know how we would take advantage of that without further changes.

In your opinion he'll score less than 5 you can't guarantee it before a ball is kicked.
