I think plugging a £2 million gap and rising shows who has the balls around here. Plus commitment to stay with us and financially support the club despite relegation looming. What is now required is an astute manager, someone who can spot what is required in the bargain basement as well as quality recruitments.

If Stefan decides to pay off the ‘no longer required’ players and front up a competitive budget middle to top, I would be happy, this is going to take time.

Butterfield and the extra Payne money will add upto a lot. Derby paid 5 million quid for him and he will be paid accordingly. Even if we are stumping up 20% or something.

This years budget should have been competitive but was spent on a massive squad with no coherant plan on how to put a team together.

They’ve made a statement today. They now need to back it. It is a big commitment, no denying that, but this mess is going to take big balls and big money to put right.
The board got us into this mess, now they need to get us out of it.

What really baffles me is what went wrong in January again, results in Nov/Dec were of a team
who would be pushing top 6
But again with the same players after January we have become relegation certainties

Butterfield, Woods & Clarke were signed. The money was there but we signed the wrong one's.

 

We need a good budget next year to keep paying the 16 players from this seasons squad who are still under contract

I think budgets are more significant in league 1 rather than league 2. More so because the gap to the championship is widening every year and you have sides like Wigan, Blackburn, Sunderland etc dropping into league 1 who have a huge budget because of parachute payments or the TV money they receive in the championship. You'll only see those with the biggest budgets go up from this division now imo and teams like Burton going up will be once in a decade if that.

A top 10 budget would probably see a side finish in the top 7 in league 2, although I'd expect us to have a top 5 budget at least next year.

 

@Storck - I imagine a combination of some team wanting a player and us giving said player a settlement to sweeten the deal. (Or is contract law saying that irrespective of the nature of a move, a player is entitled to the remainder of his contract being paid?)
If it can happen, we clear them out at less of a financial penalty than it looks like we could face by paying them up fully.

 

Same with Bury, they were very much like us last season, signing big names on big wages but poor managerial appointments and they went down. They stuck with the majority of that squad and they look like making an immediate return. Even Adam Thompson plays every week for them and he was ten times worse than O'Connor.
