There is no link between benefits and other state provisions like the NHS and National Insurance although it is used for how many years paid in to determine pension rate, The link was broken years ago to stop the comparison between what was paid in and benefits provided so any surplus or any of it could be spent on general provisions not just social provision,
For the party of low taxation it is now at a record with around a third of wages now taken in income tax and NI

As for spending the £39 billion it will be interesting that only a fraction is going to social care and majority to the NHS to shorten waiting times then the money will be transferred to the adult social care system, So to shorten the waiting times they will use the money to hire more doctors and nurses however again it will be interesting in that if or when the waiting list comes down to switch the money over to Social care will they then sack the extra doctors and nurses to free up the money to transfer it,
In truth it is all a lie and a con job and the extra money will disappear in the system as this profligate and incompetent government wastes it,

That's usually the case in life, the final payment of £45.5 million was paid in December 2006 thereby discharging the last of the second world war loans from the USA, after amassing an immense debt of £21 billion.
    Aint life a bitch.

And yet older people paid an overall tax of around 40 to 45% including NI on there earnings on a large part of their life with basic tax rates of 30 to 35% until the arrival of Thatcher who brought them down to around 25pence in the pound and Blair further reducing it to 22p in the pound, And of course until the last ten years the state pension was a pittance until the tories raised it to its present rate which is still the lowest in modern europe,
One day with luck you will be a pensioner with the youth blaming you incorrectly for the ills of the time

The other issue of course is that for my parents generation buying a house usually relied on one income.

The move towards dual income massively increased what the average family could afford and shot the prices up exponentially.

The impact on the young is slightly overplayed though as "the bank of mum and dad" is basically built on the equity that the property boom created. Of course it won't apply to everybody (it doesn't apply to me as my parents and grandparents were never home owners) but those are the breaks.

What point are you trying to make there?

Someone on £100k gets just over £33k taken off them in taxation (almost £40k in the unlikely event they're still paying student loan) so why would they mention the first £27k?

In actual fact the people earning between £100k and £125k pay the highest marginal tax in the system. For every extra £1,000 you earn between those two amounts the government takes £620 off of you (over £700 if you have student loan). Not that anyone cries for people earning over £100k of course.

It isn't even that much in practice! They work it out monthly and round it down to the nearest whole pound so £18.45 a year becomes just £1 a month.

I agree with the rising cost scenario, this is done deliberately every number of years to bring down the effective worth of everyday people like myself. It's why we have to work that little bit longer every year before we stop paying the taxman and start earning ourselves

The problem with the Railways and a lot of the privatisation the Tories have done is that while Profits are privatised any losses made are nationalised and are paid by the taxpayer,
The privatised railway companies cannot negotiate on pay because they can only offer what the government will allow

Well yes we are the second highest population by density in Europe and that’s with official figures, I’m sure there’s a few million unaccounted for on top so we are most likely the one of the highest in the western world.

I’m not trying to be the standard knuckle head about immigration here but we also have an awful lot of new comers who want housing/accommodation which puts pressure on almost everything which will cost hundreds of millions. Of course the government will never ever admit it.

Haven't they tagged a 3% rise for Social care on council tax bills year on year recently?

    Through what means?

Tax the rich is usually everyone's answer - of course who the rich are changes depending on where you stand in society - but how do you actually measure and collect it?

Don't we already have one? The 45% tax kicks in at £150k or are you saying higher than that?

The bit about NI not applying to all income makes sense.

will hit the poorest and youngest hardest, I am happy to pay more to fund adequate services for the common good but I dont think it's fair people in my age and income bracket should bear the brunt, as this measure will ensure. Just giving young people even less reason to ever vote conservative if that was possible. No contributions from others who generate income not through employment (Landlords for example), and next to no contributions in other areas vs people working.

At least we are recruiting 1000 lorry drivers a day off the dinghies..!!

The triple lock on pension has been suspended next year as i dont think any government was expecting to hand out 8% increases to pensioners on a yearly basis.
It is all down to an anomaly- workers(well you have to call them summat) coming out of furlough and back into jobs causing a wages boom.
2.5% sounds about right if they are offering nurses 1% and other public sector workers can take a hike!

As for Tony's point about illegal immigrants- he has well and truly kneed himself there- those guys and gals will be used to driving on the wrong side of the road.
    Not a good idea.
