There are some well respected backbenchers who are straight talking; honest and who act with integrity. The likes of Tobias Ellwood, Tom Tugendhat and maybe Jonny Mercer would all help to restore faith in the curent Govt. I doubt that could be said for most of the current Cabinet!

No, they're not household names but well known in Tory and wider political circles. Two are chairmen of important select committees. They'd then have a couple of years to establish themselves in the electorate's eyes before the next GE.

ps alternatively, there's always Michael Gove!

The ones I know of, Nadine Dorries, Liz Truss, Michael Gove, Prit Patel, Jacob Ress-Mogg, Dominic Rabb, etc all strike fear into me, I'd rather one of those others tbh....

To be fair one page covers all Starmer and the present Labour Party offer.

Starmer and Labour showing a 10 point lead.

Let's not beat about the bush, this is not due to Starmers leadership, it's Boris's lack of.

Swapping one liar for another if Gove gets it. Mercer would be my choice from those listed personally. At least he has a moral compass which the conservatives are in dire need of given how many of them sold out literally all of their principles because Boris won such a big majority.

Edit - To keep on topic, all starmer has to do now is appear mildly competent and the next GE is his is in my opinion. The tories have dragged themselves into the lowest gutter backing boris.

Tugenhadt and Mercer always come across very well to me.

However, it will be a two horse race between Sunak and Truss in my opinion.

Something about Sunak that I dont trust and too early for Truss I think.

This is the problem for Starmer. They bounce around in the polls on the back of what the Tories do but over time and with the more people listen to what they're actually saying it drifts away again. If they're going to stick with the line of making Johnson look bad to the electorate they need to figure out a way off making people not just Anti-Boris but actually pro-Labour. They need to offer something too.

The Daily Telegraph seem to Suggest only 24 letters are required to the 1922 committee after it is said 30 have already gone in.

This is bad news for Keir, as he is doing well by doing nothing at the moment due to a range of own goals.

I believe it is 54 letters expressing lack of confidence to trigger a leadership election

You are correct. 54 are required, reports of up to 30 have been sent 5 publicly so 24 left.

Just turned on BBC to see Kier getting tied in knots and doing a better job of defending the government than any Tory MP has done :joy:

Prime example of Kier needed to move it from and Anti-Boris message to a pro-Labour one and failing. Lest two days he's written an article on his plan to fix the NHS and a 10 point plan to live with Covid and neither of them said a single thing that came across as meaningful or resonated with me as being different.

I don't think the Tory membership would go for it - they're too high on their own supply and I suspect they'd want a full on blue blooded Tory - but Jeremy Hunt would spell big problems for Keir Starmer if he were to become the leader to take them into the next election.

It would basically nullify Starmer's key selling point, and bring back onside all those who would otherwise not find it in them to vote for a hardline Tory government.
