Cook is very similar to bobby in stature and temperament, only thing is Cook isnt allowed by the officials to put it about like bobby did,i,e, knocking the ball and the keeper in the net,but if it was allowed i'm sure he would be

He did, both as a sub I believe, my point is if he hadn't gone off the rails he could have achieved that when you compare what he had to the two strikers they had at the time in Gerry Armstrong & Billy Hamilton. Whiteside was also in the 82 squad but he was only 17.

Remember well him heading Gorham and the ball into the back of the Oldham net. I wouldn't have wanted Bobby nutting me.

Ah, apologies. I mis read the post.

Yeah I agree, if he hadn't got himself into bother on a weekly basis and looked after his body a bit better he probably had the ability to go a fair bit higher.

That said, he wasn't really a bloke for regrets!

According to the book, he played a weeks trial at Derby under McFarland, though he never played a competitive match. "All i did was muck in with the apprentices and play 2 touch football, which id never played before in my life. For a young kid that's just come in, to play 2-touch football is very hard, especially when you're a forward and you want a few touches to take a player on and have a shot!"

He nearly lost his right leg when his shin bone was broken playing for Huddersfield Town against Newport County on Saturday October 1975. As it was the 1970s, fourth division players were not treated as well or as swiftly as their modern day counterparts.
Having to wait until the Wednesday for the first operation. They put a plate in it and 6 or 7 screws.
It immediately got an infection and by Christmas with his leg literally hanging off by a thread he was very close to losing the whole thing!
After xmas when it hadn't knitted after the second operation, they then took some bone from his hip to complete the graft!
Bobby talks in great deal about how the injury effected the remainder of his career, about having to direct any any wingers putting crosses in to do it at certain angles in which he was able to jump from his left leg as jumping from the right was an impossibility.
Ironically enough, Bobby links his heading ability and upper body strength directly to the result of the terrible injury the lad suffered so early in such a genuinely promosing career

Roy McFarland took Bobby Campbell to Derby when he left Bradford City a day or so before we played Manchester United in the 3rd round second leg of of the Milk Cup at Old Trafford I wasn't aware he'd had trials at Derby but if he did it was before McFarlands time as manager.
During his time at Derby he scored 4 goals in 11 appearances which to say he'd moved up to league two which is now the Championship wasn't bad in a piss poor derby side, McFarland obviously didn't fancy him even though he hadn't played half a season and allowed Bobby to come back to Valley Parade.

I don't understand that comment, Bobby played along side McFarland at Valley Parade and McFarland has certainly never been the Derby manager previously, certainly not when Bobby was a young player.
I have the book and its a great read for football fans generally but more so Bradford City fans who remember Sir Bobby Campbell I'll have to give it another read if I missed that with regards a trial at Derby County.

If Bobby went on trial to Derby at 14, then Brian Clough would have been manager and Roy McFarland bossing their defence. Mcfarland had a long management career but even he didn't start managing at age 22.

Legend who just loved scoring goals. Still don't know how Bobby thought he'd pulled off that Liverpool goal celebration :joy:
