It wasn't about pure ability with Bobby, it was the fact he left everything on the pitch, never shirked anything and left his mark on his opponents. He drank too much, he smoked too much but you always knew he gave it his all, and as fan what more do you want from a player. It felt like he was one of us and if wasn't on the pitch he'd be in with the fans giving it large, it was a real connection he had, a worthy legend and a real one off. I'm glad he was part of my City education

The man was a cheeky monkey
I consider the influence he had on Stuart, ellis, hendrie, abbot, et al and it occurs to me that these lads are truly the last bastion of real men that are involved in the game today.
I can see Hughes' influence on Cookie as being of a similar style.
Ps. Did i tell you that i bumped into peter Jackson in brighouse last week. What a gentBronco and Silverbantam like this. -

The reason Bobby didn't progress was a lot to do with having grown up in a lawless Belfast during the early days of the "Troubles" and thinking that what he saw there represented normal life. When he came to us aged 23/ 24 he was drinking in the last chance saloon, thank god George Mulhall managed to wind him in a bit (without losing his edge).
Some will say his spell at Derby in 1983 proved he wasn't above the level we played at, but I maintain it just came too late in life for him and had he applied himself at 16 he would have made it at the very top. Remember at the time, the best defenders were no where near as technical as they are now (with the exception of Bobby Moore & Colin Todd) and Bobby had the aggression to have mixed it easily with any late 70's centre half you could name.Stop hovering to collapse... Yeah I agree, if he hadn't got himself into bother on a weekly basis and looked after his body a bit better he probably had the ability to go a fair bit higher.
That said, he wasn't really a bloke for regrets!Ulysses S Grant likes this. -
Having to wait until the Wednesday for the first operation. They put a plate in it and 6 or 7 screws.
It immediately got an infection and by Christmas with his leg literally hanging off by a thread he was very close to losing the whole thing!
After xmas when it hadn't knitted after the second operation, they then took some bone from his hip to complete the graft!
Bobby talks in great deal about how the injury effected the remainder of his career, about having to direct any any wingers putting crosses in to do it at certain angles in which he was able to jump from his left leg as jumping from the right was an impossibility.
Ironically enough, Bobby links his heading ability and upper body strength directly to the result of the terrible injury the lad suffered so early in such a genuinely promosing careerDennis likes this. -

If Bobby went on trial to Derby at 14, then Brian Clough would have been manager and Roy McFarland bossing their defence. Mcfarland had a long management career but even he didn't start managing at age 22.

Hell of a read. I never saw him play, but to me he absolutely embodies the difference between proper footy and the modern game. How i wish id have grown up watching players of that era.
Like it was alluded to in the book - the word character was invented for the man.
To consider the level of pain he musta been constantly under as well as playing in an era in which the transient nature of a football players career was oh so real - i have nothing but admiration for the fella.
Was gonna see if anyone wanted to pay a decent price for it and would have donated half to the burns unit. Alas, i reckon i overestimated its rarity! -

If not for the injury, Bobby would have been one of the very very best.. would those who saw him play agree with that?
