With Abbott leaving City, yet another former player moves on. This message board and other Social Media platforms, have in the past few months been critical of Abbott’s role with City, since his return to join the management team in 2016.

Similarly there have been a number of posters who have been critical of Stuart McCall during both his spells as a manger.

Both Abbott and McCall’s reputation, in some fans eyes have been diminished as a result of what occurred leading to their exit.

Further back in time, former players who managed the team.

    • Jewell. Left the club after a serious disagreement with Richmond.
    • Kamara. Sacked
    • Frank Stapleton. Sacked
    • Terry Yorath. Sacked
    • Terry Dolan. Sacked
    • Trevor Cherry. Sacked
    • Roy MacFarland. Left, went to Derby
    • John Napier. Sacked
Not all of the above former managers were memorable players for City, but many were respected. However the move into management and their subsequent exit from the club, could have damaged the respect they had achieved as players.

Hopkin is yet another former player, who unfortunately had his career at VP cut short though injury, but was seen in a neutral/positive light by many (our most expensive player ever). If (when) he leaves the club, will his spell as a manager change peoples perspective?

There has been a suggestion that Gary Jones could return in a coaching role. Given the positive opinion supporters have of Gary, would he be better to keep that intact, rather than run the risk of having a difficult spell and his reputation subsequently being damaged?

    All Manager's get sacked.

Jewell & Kamara got us promoted.
    Dolan very nearly.

They were better Manager's for the club, than players.

Cherry & McFarland were before my time. Not certain but I think they got a promotion each?

I guess the issue for me, is that I have never been sacked. I have always moved on. But to go from being a hero to a zero in some fans perceptions is a dreadful turn around. Loved to loathed!

For sure a lot, not all, get sacked. I just wonder if management is worth it in the longer run. Leave as a player with your reputation and dignity intact?

    "Ex's i/c club - ok?"

    Howzat?

Chose to be on the fence in this one. It really depends on the player in question -- stars don't necessarily make for good managers while others who had to really study the game to make a career in it can do very well.

I have said no. I just think I don’t want them to lose their status at the club. It always feels nice and comfy when they come back, and as fans we always love by enlarge. On a positive note, they understand the club’s and don’t have to work to connect with the fans. As fans we probably give a returnee much more licence than we would any manager that has not been City.

The day a manager is appointed takes him 1 day closer to when he is sacked...........
It's always a gamble, history with the club or not...

Frank Stapleton was player/manager but never a city legend or former player really.

As long as they are good, and dispassionate and not to close to the players then yes. But overall I think we ate better with fresh faces

    Strange comment.

That would rule out people like Klopp?

There is a line. We should probably be open to possibilities, but as the disaster with our owners has shown, there must be some understanding of the club and its standing with fans.

You've never been a professional football manager, either. It's so far removed from practically every other profession that it's incomparable. Look at the opposition manager from last Saturday and everything he's been found guilty of in the past. In most other professional appointments he'd struggle to find work. In football, they'll overlook pretty much anything if it means success on the pitch, for both players and managers alike.

The OP assumes peoples respect for others is variable dependent on whether they are successful or not. I find that a bit sad tbh. If anything my respect for McCall has been enhanced by his two spells as manager.
