    Take it England lost then?

Awful sport. Makes me laugh how many people were going to watch it who previously have never had the slightest interest in the game.

In rugby union you have to earn the right to run the ball by being better up front at the breakdown and/or breaking the gainline to nullify defensive line speed. England were brilliant up front against NZ- had them going backwards constantly which meant our offloading forwards and running backs could combine beautifully to create openings.
The Boks won the breakdown battle today so we never got our passing game going. And we kept making handling errors, giving them scrums which they bossed, leading to penalties. They were ruthlessly efficient and we had no answer. Fair play to them.
But to make the final of a world cup is no disgrace and this is a pretty young team that will hopefully keep improving.

    Each to their own, eh?
Is that because you're a League fan or just don't like rugby?

    Obviously not on here!

Not into any form of Rugby myself. Asking the Rugby League fans at work today, and not one of them interested either

A League fan. After growing up watching RL I just find RU boring.

Hopefully the play off game tonight is more exciting than last nights however...

I'm the opposite. As a southerner I grew up with union and played a bit of it at school.
I find RL one-dimensional and boring. There are so many more facets to RU - rucks, mauls, lineouts, aerial duels etc and you usually have to earn the right to run the ball by winning the forward battle.
I know that RL fans often find RU boring because there isn't enough running rugby, but I find the opposite true of RL - the free flowing tries are so frequent that they cease to be exciting. I have the same problem with basketball - when so many baskets are scored it's just not exciting to me.

I'm just watching the Japan-Ireland game. It's anything but boring! It's a great game so far. The team currently regarded as the best in the northern hemisphere at the moment is making hard work of it.

Japan have their heads in front and the crowd is right behind them. For those on here who believe that showing passion for your club involves invading the pitch and acting like an ar$e, they should take a leaf out of the Japan fans' passion book. Full blooded passion and still good natured towards the Ireland fans in their midst.

What a great game of rugby! Fantastic win for Japan. They played Ireland off the park second half and ran the legs off them.

Throws the group wide open. Probably now comes down to who gets bonus point wins against Samoa (assuming they all do so against Russia). Scotland must be sh!tting themselves.

Saw a bit of the Wales game on Sunday, after a break in play the clock was stopped at 73.11.
Clock re-starts as a scrum forms and gets to 75.50 after the scrum collapses 3 times.
Two and a half minutes of absolutely f... all.
    No thanks.

That was down to terrible refereeing. Scrum resets have generally been far less of a problem this season.

Jeez man, chill out. It was all tongue in cheek. I warch both codes but prefer league bcause its what i was brought up playing. Your attitude towards what is a great game is quite sad.

Well, I guess if I thought RL is a great game then I wouldn't call it boring.
I understand that there is far more running rugby in RL, and those who favour RL always cite this as the reason why they think RU is dull by comparison. But to me RL is very one dimensional - running with the ball is really all there is. Too much of a good thing gets dull by repetition. I much prefer the broader facets in RU - rucks, mauls, lineouts, proper scrums, aerial duels and, yes, running rugby too.

Half the things you mention aren’t really contested anymore, lineouts and scrums are pretty much just a way to restart the game. Its part of the reason i watch Union now, all the laws and facets of the game used to lead to such a stop start spectacle, even in the Woodward days it was tedious kick and clap every two minutes. Theres a reason union employs so many ex league coaches and players these days,

Not sure about that. I've seen plenty of ball stolen at contested lineouts this World Cup. Ireland lost a ton of lineout ball against Japan. Launchbury, Kruis and Itoje are all masters at winning opposition lineout ball for England.
There has been a welcome reduction in the number of reset scrums, thank goodness, but it's still a contested area, unlike RL. Teams try to push their opponents backwards, wheel the scrum or force the oppo front row to collapse. The Japanese front row were mobbed like heroes by their team mates when they won a scrum penalty against Ireland, so it's far from just being a restart.

Just as i expected, a fantastic spectacle of rugby league and a controversial refereeing decision that changed the game. A game befitting a grand final, shame the two Bradford lads come away with the loss.

Been at work so missed the refs call but Twitter has gone in to meltdown so must've been a poor decision. Shame to happen on the big stage but that's the beauty of sport.

Two refs in the NRL, last tackle 5 metres from the Roosters line one waves another set of six so the Canberra half back keeps possession. Other ref gives handover to Roosters, they go the length of the field and score in the next set of six. Another controversial call when after 3 minutes Canberra charge down, Whitehead would have been clear if he picked the ball up but the chargedown hit the Roosters water carrier/coach on the head and bounced away. Shouldn't need to be on the pitch after 3 minutes FFS. Canberra the better side.

I see that England v France has been cancelled due to an expected typhoon and the score pronounced as a 0-0 which means England qualify as groyp winners.
More than likely to play Australia in the quarter final.
