    It's someone's parent or grandparent and as such seems weird that a section of social media seem to revel in the old man's passing. Ironically the self entitled youth of today who seem to have this view.

    Yes, very sad indeed.
    I went with my daughter to the Palace when she was presented with her Duke Of Edinburgh Gold Award.
    He presented them personally and insisted on having a little chat with each award winner.

    I did a google search of his "foot in mouth' moments a while ago. Made me chuckle at some of the things he said..... I'm sure he had a mischievous glint in his eye whilst saying most of them.

    Very sad but inevitable news I suppose.

    Philip was one of my favourite Royals and loved his old school no nonsense approach to life.

    I wish the Queen all the best and hope she has the strength and will to continue in her role.

    Sad indeed; I was really hoping he would make his century. But it was a good life, well lived. It can't be easy being the sidekick to the star, in any walk of life, but he was an ideal partner. And he earned his medals.

    I worry that the Queen will shortly follow -- they've been together so long that it wouldn't be surprising. I hope not, though. The 20s produced some amazingly tough people.

    Just picked up this gem from a friend of mine.

    My father met him a number of times. During one inspection aboard ship the Duke noted the number of grease nipples on one of the big guns. He said that it had more nipples than the Dagenham Girls Choir.

    I hope it's not evening because if you lose and the forum goes into meltdown and it breaks you might have to put up with an evening without the site as I'm not sure I'm up for spending a Saturday Evening bouncing between watching football of today's level and live server readouts looking for potential issues :) Noon or 12:30 would be better for me

    If you want to think of yourself as a subject and thus subservient to the organs of state, that's a problem for you to deal with. The reality however is that you are a citizen of the United Kingdom and your rights and responsibilities are enshrined in laws and not subject to the whim of the monarch as they once were.

    The monarch is our head of state. Most other countries separate the head of state from the Govt but there are of course a few notable exceptions! She stands separate from the elected Govt and these days the role is largely ceremonial and representative although the military give their allegiance to the monarch and not the Govt of the day. But the important point is that she is apolitical without allegiance to the Govt of the day. Heaven help us if we ever decide to follow the route of having a political head of state to mirror a politically appointed Govt.

    It's only something you can really judge through being an old git like myself. As a generalisation (and not picking on perticular individual cases) there is less of a work ethic amongst the young to what there was 30 years ago. I'd expect my parents generation might says the same to me. Me generalising doesn't mean everyone because that's clearly not the case but I think with the decimation of industry has changed a generation. Only my opinion though, there may well be others of my age who think differently. Just an observation while getting older.

    I do hope if Harry flies over that he self isolates as required before attending the funeral and at the funeral there are no more than 30 people there. Covid guidelines apply to all.

    you can break isolation if attending a close family funeral. Plus the 30 limit doesn’t apply if held as part of a communal religious ceremony. The 30 would only apply to the actual burial

    And your point is exactly? Many people find speaking to Royalty intimidating and if they can say something light-hearted and ideally requires an answer such as if they still throw spears as part of their coming of age ceremony then that can help people relax. I mean sure some of his attempts to do that did show he came from a different generation and as such, it can be seen as having mild racism in them but most of what people called him out for simply wasn't.
