The EFL will have their AGM at some point this month so any decisions on squad sizes will be made at that meeting along with a decision on if we fall in line with the Premier League and introduce 5 substitutions.
Another big talking point at the AGM will be whether to scrap the 3pm black out rule fo.r the EFL.

Just to add to this issue let's not forget we don't have to register everyone, any players clearly not in MH plans like hopefully Threlkeld, Kelleher perhaps and maybe more I've forgot about will free up spaces.

He must be reasonably bad with them, have you seen how he does his hair?

I think I heard Hughes say he was quite surprised by the size of the squad he inherited and will probably work with around 22 players total.

Can not see anything changing regarding squad size as the issue last time was lack of discussion and agreement with PFA. If they had been talking and it had been any change then it would have leaked by now. The other issue was the lateness of the changes I could see a vote to look at changing from 23/24 depending on discussion with PFA

Do coaches and managers come under SCMP restrictions or just players?

Looking at the list of contracted players at present then some of them will be counted as Under 21 and therefore not be counted in the squad of 22 outfield players. think the following fit into that category
    • Cousin-Dawson
    • Staunton
    • Scales
    • Harratt
    • Young
    Add the goalkeepers:
    • Lewis
    • Hornby
    • Doyle
Then senior outfield players contracted to next season is reduced to:

    • Threlkeld
    • Foulds
    • Songoo
    • Ridehalgh
    • Kelleher
    • Platt
    • East
    • Gillead
    • Sutton (thanks to @Petrov@Petrov for the correction)
    • Walker
    • Eisa
    • Cook
    • Angol
Theoretically we could sign another 9 Senior players.

It could be that a couple of the players may leave, if they can get two year contracts elsewhere. Threlkeld, Kelleher and even Cook come to mind.

We still have four pondering over their new offers; Hendrie, Watt, Vernam and O'Connor. I would guess two will sign and two move on.

I would think a squad of around 26-28 would be the target. We need players who can perform, rather than numbers, who cannot play to the required standard.

Only players are covered by the SCMP regs. And that includes those who are on a permanent contract or on loan. But only those who are 21 and over and included on the squad list provided to the EFL and not a goalkeeper. Simples!

You've missed out Sutton, but that's pretty much what I was basing my thinking on when I said I could see at least another 5 new faces If all of the players offered new deals sign. If they don't and/or others leave then it could well be quite a few more.

That’s a squad that still needs some serious, serious work.

A right back, 1, probably 2 CBs, at least 1 holding midfielder, 2-3 attacking kids and a striker.

Yeah I agree we’ve just got work to do.

Happy with the start we’ve made, though, and I did miss sicknote Angol off my list

Yeah. Even with Angol, I think we’ll likely need another striker. If Vernam leaves he needs replacing and we need a replacement for Perreira. I’d like us to have a core squad of 20 quality players, with 3-4 younger players boosting it.

    The 20:

    Lewis, Hornby
New RB, Songo’o, Platt, Ridgehalgh, 1 or 2 New CBS
East, Sutton, Gillead, Walker, 1x New DM
Angol, Harratt, Eisa, Cook, 2x New wingers, 1 more striker

    Squad Players
    Foulds, Young, Staunton, FCD, Young

    Surplus:
Kelleher, Scales, Threlkeld. I’d also be open to Staunton leaving, possibly on loan. I wouldn’t be opposed to Cook going either, but that would mean 2 new forwards coming in.

That’s broadly what I think we need to do. And whilst I like the recruitment strategy so far, I’d like one of the centre backs and the DM to be older heads. Possibly the extra striker too.

That’s a squad of about 24 players. I’d rather that, than a squad of 26-28, based on paying a bit extra to fill the remaining squad places with proven quality.

I am still hoping Perreira returns an exciting player

Yeah I’d like to see him come back too. I’m also hoping we get Watt and Vernam to stay, but I doubt it. I’d take Paudie back too, but I also think he’s off.

    -------------------------Lewis----------------------

    Hendrie-----Platt-----Songo'o------Ridehalgh

    --------------Gilliead-----Smallwood-------------

    Chapman----------Walker------------------Eisa

    -------------------------Angol------------------------

    Subs:

    Doyle (GK)
    Crichlow
    Sutton
    East
    Osadebe
    Harratt
    Young

And that's without (potentially) Watt & Pereira.

No room for Foulds, Cook, Kelleher, Hornby, Threlkeld, Finn Cousin Dawson, Staunton, Scales, and the even younger players.

It's a pretty massive squad as it stands, I wouldn't be surprised if 1 or 2 players leave (as well as loans), but I'd definitely like to see that defence improved.

I think Crichlow will start and Foulds is almost guaranteed a spot in the 18 as he counts as the homegrown player.

I don’t think Eisa will start, myself. Looks lightweight. Reckon Gilly will start on the wing or maybe Young

That is a cracking XI if those two did sign :)
