I wasnt happy with the Clayton signing but not sure it makes us weaker. Id argue it doesnt really improve us.
Songo and Angol are no loss. Doesnt really matter who we brought in to replace.
Wright is a loss. I think Young is a mistake. We will see if Foulds is although I did think we needed to improve the LB spot. Time will tell!!!
Anyway my assumption is...
Bola - Foulds
Kelly - Kelleher
Clayton - Songo
Nevers - Wright
Derbyshire - Angol
Costelleo - Young
Osadebe on his way back. Ridehalgh will be an option. Id still argue we gained Walker this window too. We look better than 3 months ago on paper.Interested Bystander likes this. -

If we’re on about stats, the lad who does experimental 3-6-1 blog has just updated and done his League 2 xG table.
https://experimental361.com/2023/01/28/expected-goals-table-league-2-28-jan-2023/
As you’d expect for us, not pretty reading. Suggests we are a midtable side. That’s fair I think. Improvement certainly needed from here Sparky.Rogered Tart likes this. -
I think the performance against three teams who were on decent form, i.e. Salford, Wimbledon and Stockport show that we are playing better.
Fans have been obsessed with chance creation ever since McCall left in 2018.
It means diddly squat though, because despite been as terrible as you describe - we're firmly in the promotion race with our best player, injury permitting, available for the rest of the season.
I've liked Hughe's new more pragmatic approach and apart from Rochdale, which after all was ruined by a ref, we've looked fine.vladimir likes this. -

they needed to after the Carlisle debacle. We failed to muster a shot on goal there?
however, I wouldn’t say the points earned at Wimbledon or Stockport were from good attacking displays - so we haven’t addressed our long term issues in securing decent points.
i blame the ref and tricky conditions for the Rochdale loss. Id put a line through that game for analysis as Eisa was felled. If we get that pen we go 2-0 up and win the game.
But we’ve lost Wright - our best wide attacking threat - and havent got crosses into the box like we did in that Salford game subsequently. Im not convinced the players we have can deputise for Wright over a full season.
where is Chapman btw? He needed a rest to take himself out the firing line, but we miss his pace and Costello is offering little.vladimir likes this. -
Since when have performance in Cup games, been used as evidence of the type of play that occurs in the league you're in?
Maybe I've missed your point. But it appears to be that you think that Wrexham would give entertainment, 10 shots on target per match etc. When if they did, they'd be a rarity in L2 history.vladimir likes this. -
You forget, that once Walker has played more than two matches on the trot what an asset he will be.
This isn't a pipe dream, we improved drastically at the end of last season when he returned.
Keeping him fit, as he is injury prone - is of course another challenge.
However, if he plays the last 19 matches, I bet we are closer to automatic than outside the play-offs.vladimir likes this. -
I haven’t a clue what the starting 11 will be on Saturday. One things for sure, Hughes had better nail it down quickly. Mansfield being well backed will be more coherent as a unit than us and unless we’re on the front foot, I can imagine the silence will be deafening again.

Id prefer to give ourselves the best chance possible. I look at the list of available wingers/forwards and think we could cut that down by 3 players for 1 player of real quality. Id prefer to throw all our eggs into 1 basket than the tried and tested scattergun approach.
Maybe someone like Keillor-Dunn instead of Nevers, Costelleo and Dion.Dratsab taf likes this. -

I watched Wrexham v Sheff Utd and it was typical Parky which worked a treat.
If we had someone like Tozer launching the ball from every throw in to Cook and Oliver they’d create havoc in the box, defenders would panic.
Loose balls would fall to the likes of Walker and Chapman.
The back 4 didn’t need changing in my opinion.
Yes it’s pre-historic dinosaur tactics but it would have absolutely got us out of this league and probably the league above.
At that point you revise tactics and bring in players that can operate at Championship level with appropriate tactics easier on the eye.Tennesseebantam likes this. -

Those who don't appreciate Smallwood should watch him for a period during the match rather than the whole team and see what he does. It reminds me of the few games Terry Yorath played in for us, he was lost because the players around him weren't on his wavelength. Smallwood is having to do the work of two, and if we go back to a 4231, with Clayton alongside instead of Gillyhead, we should see a better player. There is no way on gods earth that Gillyhead is a defensive midfielder, suited to a 4231.

Smallwood is a quality player. But his set pieces are poor.
