So managers can get sacked and contracts terminated at a whim but players can't.

Thinking today just what would it be like if players could get sacked off when playing shit.

How would that change their outlook knowing they could be out of work, just like any one else if they do not perform.

Maybe football needs to change its approach to handing out contracts to players without some sort of quality control? I mean in a normal job you have probationary periods so why not footballers?

The argument that their time in employment as a footballer is limited is true. But why should they not be assessed during that time for their ability and performance?

I do realise that putting this in place right now would result in us having no actual starting 11 but just wondered what others thought?

I totally agree - professional sport is the only place where you can get rewarded for failure - ie getting your contract paid up for being poor at your job.

In a normal job your employer would have to go through numerous processes before sacking you for bit being good at your job. Some sort of warning, seeing if it was a skill issue or a will issue, extra training by people that are good at the task, chance to improve etc.
How would that work with a footballer?

Incorrect - in the first 1-2 years of your contract, your employer can sack you and you don’t have a leg to stand on, after 2 years there is protocol to adhere to

Go through that process you outlined. Video evidence will be available to say we taught you to do X and you continually do Y.

Just an observation on that point above. Many service personnel have a time limited career. Not many serve beyond twenty two years. They can operate away from home and family and in dangerous environments. However they have far lower levels of pay. People can and do move on and have second careers. A career in football should be seen as a stage in a players career. Given the ageing population of the UK, it is highly probable that some of the younger players, will not be able to draw a pension until they are 70. It is totally unrealistic to think that the vast majority of players can earn sufficient in their careers, to support them throughout the rest of their lives.

Looking at the last point, I guess it is hard to produce an objective formula about performance and wether or not a player is operating at an acceptable level. I would be interested to see how you propose to measure it? Employment law may mean it is difficult to terminate contracts, without some objective measurement.

Fair points. And yet managers are sacked when in play off positions. So employment law is not really a barrier to terminating contracts in football.

That is sort of right legally. Unless there is any sort of discrimination you don’t have any claim to unfair dismissal but you could still sue for breach on contract. Plus a lot of companies have the processes built into the terms and conditions so are not time restricted

And in that time they are still getting picked to play on a regular basis?

Usually a 6 or 12 months period. It does highlight how footballers get it easy on contracts though.

    These links may help.
‘The bargaining position of many managers is such that they are able to negotiate favourable severance clauses that provide for much higher compensation then they would be able to recover in a Employment Tribunal claim for unfair dismissal, which would be subject to a statutory cap on a compensation award of £74,200’. https://www.lyonsdavidson.co.uk/ask-football-managers-employment-rights/

‘Hence, when a club sacks a coach, the common situation would be such that, reverting to the contract, the club would pay the manager compensation for its early termination. Such compensation is usually calculated based on the remaining period of the contract, i.e. the earlier the termination, the higher the compensation.

In some cases, managers might not have clauses in their contracts that provide they have a duty to mitigate any loss suffered as a consequence of the termination of their employment. This can lead to a scenario where a sacked manager is paid off, say, the remaining 2 years of their contract then gets another job a short time later, meaning it adds up as something of a windfall’. https://www.sportsscore.co.uk/blog/2017/11/13/legal-fallout-from-managerial-sackings

Football has to really look at itself and decide how it wants to be a sustainable business going forwards. Paying off managers/players for failure is ludicrous. Yet it goes on.

It's an interesting angle. There's that many stats available now that you could feasibly set players minimum expectations in terms of performance and fitness.

I’ve worked across a number of industries and I can not remember a single person getting sacked for being rubbish.

on the flip side there aren’t many businesses where transfer fees are paid for people either

problem is everything is so interlinked. A striker doesn’t score enough so he blames the others for lack of service. Doesn’t matter how good a striker you are if the ball doesn’t ever get to you.

Aaron McClean is a good example of a really shit striker. Couldn't trap a ball nor control one whilst at City. He stole a living from us. Easy to see and identify his shortcomings. Nothing to do with service.

Just a small side thought. Now that the EFL has introduced Salary Caps, then if a player were ‘sacked’, with a Contract for the season, then the club would probably have to pay them off the rest of its duration. If they did, then the EFL could say that they could not reuse the sum to sign another player. Another factor would be the number of players the club had signed. Say it had been up to the 22 ceiling, the EFL could claim that you could not sign another player. I could see other clubs saying that you were trying to get an unfair advantage.
