Thankfully the petition to remove the statue of Peel and the renaming of the park has been withdrawn.
I suspect the person who hastily set the petition has read up on his history now and conceded there is no valid reason for the statue to be removed

I just don't get it.
I could go on a big rant but I can't be arsed. These statues are part of history, yes they had differing views, wrong views but it was a different world back then, you can't just erase it and forget it ever happened.
It's like all the stuff getting removed from streaming sites, Little Britain, Mighty Boosh, League of Gentleman etc. Then the celebs like Leigh Francis are coming out and apologising because they weren't aware it caused offence. It didn't cause offence, nobody even raised an eyebrow back then and shouldn't now.BradfordBanter, meelin, MallorcaBantam and 4 others like this. -

I'll be honest until the press picked up on the mob throwing Colstons statue in the river I wasn't aware of his past as I'm sure if others are honest neither were they, but we are where we are it seems that only the white men who were slave traders are the bad guys, yet it was manly black gang masters who sold the slaves to the likes of Colston.
Without doubt looking at the situation he was dealing in slave trafficking to generate his wealth I can't see where any poster has tried to argue differently, unfortunately we are talking about things that happend 400 years ago where things were completely different, that's not an excuse but fact.
Colston was without doubt involved in trafficking slaves, but on the other side was his philanthropy supporting endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, giving away much of his wealth to help others.
I'm sure we'll not agree on this subject but this is all brought about because of (which I don't condone) the loss of a career criminal in Minneapolis, what we are seeing now has very little to do with that indecent, of course "black lives matter" but no more than white or any other skin colour of a fellow human.RCarol, Tony Wilkinson and SelbyFan like this. -

The bright side of this story is at least you don’t have a mob tearing it down. People have the right to petition for it to be removed and people have the right to fight for it to stay. As long as it doesn’t descend into the ridiculous scenes elsewhere I’m fine with it. We still live in a free and democratic country people on all sides need to get perspective and start acting like it again.

Will this statue be up for discussion on whether it should be removed or not Nelson Mandela was accused of being a member of ANC a terrorist organisation for many years.
Later Nelson Mandela proved himself to be a great leader but at the time trying to overthrow the then government was a serious offence, would anyone still class this man as a terrorist for what we now know that he did for South Africa's, becoming South Africa's first black president. -
Is this where I ask about the forcible repatriation of 45,0000 Russian Cossacks by Winston Churchill at the end of the Second World War, or would that be a different page?

Modern slavery is prevalent in the UK, the gangmasters, the county linesmen, the Mr Bigs all add to the small fry of society being exploited.

The Robert Peel statues are a great part of the debate. The father of the modern police force and quite a liberal for a Tory! Interesting on the Wiki page he wasn't afraid to change his mind for the greater good with this quote quite pertinent at the moment "though emancipation was a great danger, civil strife was a greater danger".
Undoubtedly, he wouldn't have ever been the Prime Minister had his father not been a very rich man funded in part by the slave trade.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Bronco likes this. -
When was the consultation on this? This destruction of statues is some sort of post-truth nightmare. What next? Renaming roads you do not like?Jayteebee likes this. -

This is a part of history that Lawrence of Arabia was involved in when with with the help of the Arabs he twice helped drive the Turks from that land.
A lot of these protesters are selective in remembering certain historic events.Rogered Tart likes this. -

And with regards to 'blackface' and other things thats a changing of the times. I'm not a fan of censoring things as it shows the culture of the time. (Friends has poor attitudes towards being gay but it was 25 years ago! )Bronco likes this. -
