Pretty much every independent broadcaster is effectively a voluntary subscription service. It's just that it's done indirectly through advertising. No independent broadcaster does it for free. Before someone pipes up and says that people have the choice to ignore purchasing of products that have been advertised on their platforms - well that's a nonsense. You would have to go to the supermarket armed with a huge list of products that have and have not been advertised. It's for the birds. No one does it, it's far too time consuming. At the end of the day we all pay. Nice to hear that people have such a low regard for a great British institution with a great history. Perhaps we should just let a foreigner like Murdoch take it all.

Or perhaps we should all just have the freedom of choice?

The BBC is NOT an independent broadcaster, Its fees and income are decided by the government of the day and as such the BBC tows the line no matter what it or anyone else says or believes. It does not and never will bite the hand that feeds it.

Yes except those over 75 threatend with balifs , perhaps you can justify Gary Linekar's £ 1.4 m per annum or Zoe Ball £1 m + , perhaps Mr Marr a devout marksist 0n £750k . They dont have to compete when they make there own rules up as they go . I detest the BBC , they've become too political and rarely praise any government action . The news department are all left wing university educated tree huggers who pontificate about people struggling on UC , yet still rob old age pensioners , over 100 of this organisation earn more than anybody in Parliament . If these are so great why dont they try and succede in the real world .

The government’s shameful decision on the triple lock pension is pushing the elderly further into poverty, not the BBC.

True but making them pay £3 a week out of an already low pension does not help

The BBC got their latest charter on the proviso that they would NOT start robbing OAPs , they've renaged on that . They forget about their " positive " approach to TV by targetting a " younger audience " . Very few of the " younger audience " actually watch the BBC . Or indeed pay this stealth tax .
