You're losing your touch. You used to be able to spot a forward.

You maybe right, but we had a number of midfielders at the time. I think Josh came in late. In any event Stuart liked the lad and he was a regular on the bench, so wasn’t dropped as such, just more experienced midfielders.

It may have done, but that is my point about the owners philosophy, what is their main aim? What are their priorities. Is it to gain promotion? Or develop players to sell. For me we cannot afford to do both at the same time. It takes time to develop a young team, and during the course of that process there will be major setbacks, including relegation. Stuart went for experience down the spine of the team to try and gain promotion, I presume that is most certainly what Rupp wanted to he could start to get some money back.

Pace and ball control yes. Pace but leaving the 50 yards behind him no. Seedorf was bad and I reckon at 54 I could have stopped him.

you can do both and clubs have shown it in the past, the problems come when everybody expects everything now and yesterday. there's no long-term vision from fans, and in some respect owners anymore.. albeit, you do need a bit of luck at the same time and there are too many factors to take into account to be able to promise success 100%, but what you can do is put all the fundamentals in place to give you the best opportunity.

take the example of jon lewis and jack harrison - these two players were brought to the club on trial; one was taken on and stuck in a house in wrose with an elderly family and given no support to maximise his potential. the other wasn't even watched by any of the coaching staff in the trial match that was organised for him. now look at them, lewis is playing for new york city and has the eyes of premier league and championship clubs on him and jack harrison is currently on-loan at leeds fro manchester city who paid £2m for him not so long ago. now i'm not saying these two players would have developed into the players they are now under our coaching set-up but we didn't give ourselves the slightest of chances. it'll take hard work, effort and patience to get to where we want to be, but not many are willing to give that.

Good post - we need to seriously look at the whole picture of developing youngsters not just in training and on the field of play.

Lewis actually signed for us. It was very rare for Parky to take a punt on a young kid, so we must have rated him highly.

I agree with everything you have said. However, this requires major investment to do both, and a long term vision as you have stated. I don’t see any of that at the moment. We cashed in our asset Ie Charlie. We needed him, but I am presuming he wanted to go. You have to make your club and surrounding environment a place where players want to come and develop their career, but you also have to invest on a major scale. We were on the edge of the Championship, that is why fans are angry and frustrated, is because they can’t see the long term vision or even short term vision.

You’ve missed one vital ingredient from your last sentence. Money. And plenty of it. You can bring players through but it needs far better resources than currently at our disposal. I’m all for youth development but you can’t play at it these days, you need to be fully committed and that means huge investment.

As Stuart said '18k fans won't accept bringing through young kids' as the goal. If that's Edin's game he should have bought Rochdale or Walsall.

Jon Lewis was a strange one, because he signed for us before telling people he didn't want to play in League One and then asked for his contract to be terminated because he was homesick.

He duly went home, played at college level, and then signed for New York.

No one doubted he was good enough, and Newcastle United wanted to sign him after he left us.

But, true to his word, he went back to the US on far less money.

I agree, the goal should always be to finish higher than the season before. As i’ve said countless times Peterborough have the right idea for a sustainable club but it isn’t guaranteed. They go for partially developed talent from the lower league and guarantee them game time for the chance to play at a higher level.

yes, money does help - of course it does but barnsley didn't have the greatest amount of money before their new owners came in in 2017; patrick cryne prior to selling due to ill health had a net worth of £40m.

    yet as a club they still managed to sign / produce players for relatively small amounts and then sell them for decent amounts of money. such as;

    - marc roberts; signed for £0 and sold for £3.6m
    - angus macdonald; signed £undisclosed and sold for £800k
    - alfie mawson; signed £0 and sold for £5m with substantial sell on clause
    - james bree; signed £0 and sold for £3.15m
    - conor hourihane; signed for £225k and sold for £3.15m
    - sam winnall; signed for £45k and sold for £500k
    - mason holgate; signed for £0 and sold for £1.25m
    - john stones; signed for £0m and sold for £3.15m with substantial sell on clause

so yes, money helps of course it does, however it's not the be all and end all - but it does take patience and willing.

agreed but if we'd have taken better care of him when he first came maybe he wouldn't have been so homesick. sticking him in a home with an elderly couple didn't help him settle in.
