Nice to see Hughes has finally listened to the section of fans that were very disenchanted in the garbage served up, and got us our first convincing victory of the season. Hopefully he doesn't resort back to the crap some are clearly happy with, and it might get him a contract beyond next summer.

 

Great win. Superb performance. Cooky was...Cooky. It's a very fine line between success and defeat. If Cooky had gone off injured long term after 20 mins and we'd gone on to lose 3-0, it's fair to say that it could well have been Sparky's last game in charge. As it is, we take on Boro on Tuesday with a lot more optimism.

 

Tbf we have two centre forwards and both were injured we don’t have another in that mould in the club. So it was always going to be difficult

 

As I said in an earlier post Newport are very open in style it will be a much different proposition against Wallsall

 

Wow! I’ll happily eat humble pie, I didn’t think we would even score today. Best performance of the season by a COUNTRY MILE……FINALLY!!!

Firstly Cook. Class. I’ve often been his critic but wow did he show us what we have missed today.

Thought Odour and Tulloch were really great first half. Really pulled Newport all over the place with (finally!) some decent quality into the box.

Macdonald was also class for me. I really like him. Not only his assist for Tulloch, which showed his past level - different class. But as a whole performance it was exactly what I’ve always wanted to see from Smallwood.

Walker and Halliday again really good.

TBF all the team earned their crust today.

However I’ll leave the finally credit to Hughes and staff. The work apparently done in training certainly looked like it paid off. They’ve deservedly had a lot of stick this season and it’s been well deserved - but only fair to acknowledge they got it right today.

Something to build on - important we do.

 

How refreshing to see a City side playing with intensity and attacking purpose. Its an approach thats the exception rather than the rule where Hughes is concerned, so lets see if it can be repeated consistently.

 

Hopefully not a flash in the pan.
Need to back it up on Saturday against Walsall.

Hughes should have taken him off after 60 mins to give him a break

 

The annoying thing is most fans could see that, today we played it on the grass and when it got tight we launched it, nothing wrong with that they're league two players, and the plus side is we scored goals, 17 shots 7 on target thats what we want to see not 70 % possession with 1 shot on target.

 

I would be very tempted to have him on the bench Tuesday. Saturday is much more important and we need to keep him fit

Today showed how important he is and a cup game against Boro doesn’t compare with keeping him fit for the league campaign.

 

Fantastic win and the first half especially excellent. I just don’t trust this team to do that more than once a blue moon. Maybe they’ll kick on and prove me wrong. Bottle that because that type of performance will get us moving in the right direction.

 

And he would then have got pelters for "sitting back"...!

Donny in a false position. I never said Gillingham wouldn't win another game all season. I bet you wet yourself with excitement. Enjoy yourself if we can keep putting the performances together hopefully we can join them.

 

Agree. I don't think he's pessimistic. The start to the season has been very poor prior to today. I'm not sure why people should be criticised for showing concern.
