It really depends on how versatile Payne is. Is his game limited to playing just behind the striker/s or can he genuinely provide an extra body in the centre whilst having the ability to get forward? If it's the latter, then our captain Josh Wright is the limiting factor.

 

I've seen nothing to suggest Payne is a must-start just yet.

Leaving systems aside I think we’ve recruited well - though we need a couple more.

However, if the idea is that we’re completely committed to playing 343, I’d say we’ve not recruited as well as many think. And I still think it’s a formation unlikely to work at this level unless you throw huge wedges of cash at it.

You're confusing pedigree with hard statistical fact, which can be analysed.

 

The hard statistical fact you are reffering to is his pedigree. You're not using his performances in a City shirt to justify his 'danger man' tag, you're using his succesful track record which is partly what others are doing with Payne. He also scored the winning goal vs Shrewsbury and (apparently) played a blinder, so I think he has a lot going for him.

Although Barnsley didn't threaten our goal area initially - they certainly broke up OUR attempts easily, and broke away quickly, thus suggesting a threat.

I actually thought he may stick with 3 to see if the system works, but I’m now thinking he’s realised 3 isn’t working. (If he has realised that it’s taken him just 2 matches, whereas took “more qualified” Grayson many more).

IMO a squad overhauled completely in the summer needs and experienced coach to help them get , I’m sure he’s a great coach but he’s a novice without a mentor
