Unfortunately whether we like it or not loans are going to be a big part of it and you have to be patient for them. That’s why I was pleased to read that the club have been lobbying early to premiership teams for players we want

Of course loans are important but waiting until August for them to possibly arrive but not a 100% guarantee is risky rather than assembling the squad now with quality players that are available.
If then the loans materialise then that’s a bonus but to put all the emphasis on whether loans will come is crazy.

I suppose it depends on what sort of promises have been made by the parent clubs

So imagine we have an ‘agreement’ with Palace for Banks to come back but then on the day of his arrival a league 1 club comes in and trumps us?
We should learn our lesson from from the Williams debacle and snap the best players up now.

Hope they are better than a Johnny Williams promise/agreement.

Exactly my point. Get them in early. If the players won’t commit early then it’s obvious they’re holding out for better offers in which case we move on to next

It’s different with loans it’s about relationships and contacts not necessary money with premier league clubs

Ultimately, it's about what the parent club thinks is best for their player's development. They could well be very happy to send player x to us, until a club in league 1 have one of their players suffer a long term injury in preseason and can guarantee player x game time at a higher level. You can have all the contacts and best relationships you like, but it doesn't change the fact that the parent club will always put the interests of their player above any of that.

They send them where they happy they are being looked after and trust the club in question that’s why I think it’s a good thing building relationships with them

Of course it's a good thing to build those relationships, I'm not saying it isn't, but circumstances can and do change all the time so it would be foolish to just say, 'oh, we've got a really good relationship with so and so club so we don't need to worry about signing a player for that position because they've said they'll let us have one'.

I accept what you are saying but if you have identified the player you want and need then it’s worth taking the calculated risk and being patient

So what you are saying is we should settle for second best just for expediency

The subject of loans and the timeframes for waiting for the best opportunities has been explained by the club numerous times.

The primary reason loan deals - particularly with the Premier League and Championship clubs - do not happen until the backend of the summer transfer window is because they do not want to commit releasing a player until they have their squad in place.

They also like to play them in pre-season friendlies to assess their progress within their own set up.

That has been my understanding for a number of seasons now.

I fully understand the loan system and why they don’t happen until late in the summer but that doesn’t help us plan and assemble the squad unless there is an absolute guarantee of those loans arriving.
For example if it was 100% certain Banks was coming back, we wouldn’t be looking to sign a right winger as a priority.
Loans are useful and have greatly helped us in previous seasons but the uncertainty doesn’t help.

Not sure why signing players early means settling for second best?

Bumped in response to the thread around why and what’s gone wrong. June people were predicting this.

Surely early signings are your first choice ? On loans, they are (these days) more than likely to be untried young PL players, the days of experienced loans (certainly in the summer window) is gone.

Therefore, the loans should be squad fillers rather than first choices. How many summer loans are primed and ready to go, and an improvement on your own players ? Even with Critchlow, we did much better with Stubbs & Platt from January to late April.

And yet Crichlow is starting every week and getting good performance reviews. Our best players over the years have invariably been the loan players, most have gone on to better things, not something you can say for most of our permanent signings.
