That's what happens when private equity firms take over businesses which employ lots of people. Stage 1 - The company is loaded with debt to repay the new owners for their upfront costs from their purchase. Stage 2 - Employ a new senior management team who are heavily incentivised to reduce the cost base. Stage 3 - Staffing numbers and Ts&Cs are reduced to allow the company to pay its way with higher borrowing costs. Stage 4 - Sweat the assets .. or more usually sell some assets to help manage the debt costs.

It's nothing new; it's an old playbook!

It has been in trouble for the past decade at least. It missed the boat with home shopping and also convenience stores. They have tried to catch up but never did. Their main problem is the historic unwillingness to change

There’s some truth in that, but there’s absolutely no doubt it has gone downhill far more rapidly since the hedge fund vultures took over.

We’ve been doing our big weekly shop at Morrisons in Guiseley for nearly thirty years. It’s got noticeably worse over the past couple of years. The amount of stuff that is routinely out of stock is shocking. And the prices have rocketed. It’s barely more expensive to shop at Waitrose or M&S these days than Morrisons.

I agree it has gone down hill with prices rising and availability issues but I’m not sure how much that is down to the new management or down to wider retail issues. I know we have had horrendous availability issues across a range of stuff at work over past few years

It seems to have suffered worse than competitors though. I’ve had numerous instances of things being out of stock at Morrisons but available at Marks & Sparks or Waitrose.

M&S working on a plan to take more grocery shopping away from other supermarkets.

As someone who has routinely shopped at Morrisons in Guiseley for decades, I could easily see me crossing the road to M&S instead, if Morrisons doesn’t up its game soon. Since we buy mostly fresh fruit, veg and fish, rather than prepackaged food, the absence of many major brands at M&S wouldn’t particularly bother me.

Went in to Rothwell cafe but all coffee machines not working and hot water machine for tea down for repairs. What a shambles of a company Morrisons are

Well there might be a story there. In the last year or so I believe Morrisons have consolidated their supplier base and dispensed with many service suppliers in favour of a national agreement with a facilities management company. Probably the highest profile local victim of this was Mittons who went into admin in September after losing the Morrisons contract. I read that as many as 80 suppliers were cut but don't know how true that is. Now there is probably a good argument for reducing the supplier base, but often service will suffer. I suspect the many redundancies may also have some small effect on the local economy.

Not shopped in Morrisons for years. I often found some of their front line staff quite rude and unfriendly.

I switched to Sainsburys instead, and the contrast is quite vast. Much friendlier staff and a better all round experience.

My wife had a spell working at head office about 15 years ago, and she has always maintained they were the worst company she worked for, and like myself, she worked for some big organisations in the financial sector.

M & S and Aldi all chaos this lunchtime. Morrisons dead in comparison. That company hasn’t got long I’m afraid, real shame but so much better out there. Sainsbury’s cheaper and better for example especially with nectar deals.

Haven't shopped in Morrisons for a decade or more. Dull drab interior and staff. Managers always look like they are ready for a fight.

Asda , Aldi or Sainsbury's for me-much more pleasant experience.

Asda is terrible, just a warehouse with no style at all. The 'beige' of supermarkets.

Every time I come home, I do a few trips to Morrison’s at 5 lane ends. I actually really like it, especially when compared to our local Kroger or Walmart. Like the deli part but no more meat and potato pies. Sometimes nip down to Sainsburys at Greengates but just prefer Morrison’s.
Oh, and this will probably surprise you but the quality and selection of the basic foods (fresh veg, meat, fish etc) is so far in front of USA it’s not funny.

Sainsbury down at Greengates only have 4 manned checkouts left now, if they are all open.

Used to be loyal to Morrisons until 2 years ago when I had a bit of a fall out with customer services - voted with my feet and haven’t set foot in there since.

That supermarket has really gone downhill. Went there the other day for the first time in years and couldn’t believe how shoddy it was.
